Defense Mechanism question

Out of all the defense mechanisms ... Flight Aggression Rationalization Resignation Reaction-Formation Compensation Projection Denial of reality, does anyone know which one is the most commonly used by students in aviation training?

I've no documentation to support this as it is not explicitly stated in the aviation instructor's handbook; but,

I believe it to be a combination of projection and rationalization. The real reason for a lack of progression often is a lack of studying, the projection results from the fact that the perception is the instructor is demanding too much or to difficult an expectation.

The reality is not that the instructor demands more than normal, but the student has not put the effort in to be anything more than spoonfed.

i don't think that's true for all students, not at all. i think this is one of those things that will have no clear-cut answer because every single student is different and has different motivations, pressures, perceptions, etc. etc. etc..

that's a really, really poor attitude. unfortunately, it's all too common in this profession.

The most common one I've seen (or the most obvious anyways) is whichever category these fall under:

"Oh yeah, I'd be right on altitude if it wasn't for this wind!"

"A gust made me land off centerline"

"This plane flys crooked"

etc... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif

I'd say projection is the most common.

Most students tend to blame outside factors for their poor performance, whether it's the wind, the airplane, the time of day, the clouds, ATC, another airplane, etc.

I feel it is projection with my experience. And I strongly agree, It's their money! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bandit.gif

Hell... I still do that! I didn't bounce it down the runway... the wind bounced it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't blame the wind, it was the Earth wobbling.

Or the runway was lowered since you were there last.
