I believe it to be a combination of projection and rationalization. The real reason for a lack of progression often is a lack of studying, the projection results from the fact that the perception is the instructor is demanding too much or to difficult an expectation.
The reality is not that the instructor demands more than normal, but the student has not put the effort in to be anything more than spoonfed.

i don't think that's true for all students, not at all. i think this is one of those things that will have no clear-cut answer because every single student is different and has different motivations, pressures, perceptions, etc. etc. etc..

that's a really, really poor attitude. unfortunately, it's all too common in this profession.
