First i want to congratulate Jeff (Tram) on your MEI. I am hanging out in ATL waiting on my MEI checkride. I have been assigned a DE from the Orlando FSDO, but it seems we have not been able to schedule the checkride. My flight partner has is ride tommorow.

I have been studying my guts out....getting ready...now i just want to get moving. I have my last prep flight tommorow then i will be signed off for the checkride. By the way spin training is a blast...at least after the first 2-3 spins..you start to have fun.

CFI school was great, you get to meet a variety of pilots from various backrounds. In our class we had career pilots, guys doing charter work and parachute drops...to a retired airline captain. Since Monday everyone has been shipped off to thier repective checkrides...i will sit and wait..at least the apartments here are very nice.. the best i have seen.

Note to all you guys on your x-c phase...hit the books early...you have to know everything for your checkride anything is game to the examiner....and I don't have to tell you that is a ton of information...also fly your x-c from the right seat..it will help you adjust your sight picture for landings and manuevers.

Hopefully I can post back that I have completed my MEI in a few days.

Hey Mark good luck on that checkride. You guys will be fine. Aaron and I just passed our commercial rides today and are waiting to hear where we're going to be sent for CFI school.

Congrats on the commercial to both of you guys. I just found out my checkride is scheduled for Friday...in Fort Lauderdale. Must be getting quite in Dallas....were all out of the nest.

What Mark is saying about preparing early for the MEI checkride is very true. I'm Tim, his instructor in that program. The fact that Mark started early flying from the right seat and studying, etc. has made a big difference in his success in my class. Good luck on your checkride Friday morning, Mark!

you'd think that, but there are 4 career pilots there now (not counting the 3 10monthers, and some more scheduled to start, still busy.

anyway, good luck on the MEI, if you stop by jax, stop by and say hi

hey tim, this is casey from the last class you did down at JAX. hows ATL treating you?

in that class when we were talking about flight instructors and medicals (not needing one specifically), someone brought up being compensated w/o a medical being in writing, and i wanted to throw that reference your way in case you wanted to use it.

http://www.faa.gov/avr/afs/infoforpilotsowners/index.cfm

under that page, the part 61 FAQ, is the reference.

QUESTION: Do the rules permit a flight instructor to even receive compensation for instruction when that flight instructor holds only a third class medical, or maybe does not even hold a current medical certificate at all?

ANSWER: § 61.23(b)(5); Yes, in accordance with § 61.23(b)(5), a flight instructor who does not hold a medical certificate may give flight and ground training and be compensated for it. In the preamble of the parts 61 and 141 final rule that was published in the Federal Register on April 4, 1997 (62 FR 16220-16367) when the FAA revised the entire Part 61, the FAA stated the following in the Federal Register on page 16242 in response to whether a medical certificate is required for a flight instructor to give ground and flight training:

“ With respect to the holding of medical certificates by a flight instructor, the FAA has determined that the compensation a certificated flight instructor receives for flight instruction is not compensation for piloting the aircraft, but rather is compensation for the instruction. A certificated flight instructor who is acting as pilot in command or as a required flight crewmember and is receiving compensation for his or her flight instruction is only exercising the privileges of a private pilot. A certificated flight instructor who is acting as pilot in command or as a required flight crewmember and receiving compensation for his or her flight instruction is not carrying passengers or property for compensation or hire, nor is he or she, for compensation or hire, acting as pilot in command of an aircraft. . . . In this same regard, the FAA has determined that a certificated flight instructor on board an aircraft for the purpose of providing flight instruction, who does not act as pilot in command or function as a required flight crewmember, is not performing or exercising pilot privileges that would require him or her to possess a valid medical certificate under the FARs.”

Alright... I have my intial CFI mult- completed. I am at day 90, with my CFII schuduled for Wendsday..so I am preparing for my next checkride. The intial was pretty darn tuff. My oral was 4 hours and 45 minutes long...passed that....the pratical did not end in a pass. I messed up on my single engine approach. The recheck was a no problem .5 and I have my CFI ticket.

Mark- Congrats bro!

PS ---my examiner was Brooks Black..he is by no means an easy ride or oral...but he is fair. You need to hit the books hard and come prepared. Remember pass or fail it is up to you. So come prepared...and good luck to you future CFI's
