Dash speed brakes

JordanD

Here so I don’t get fined
Just a quick question for the Dash guys. Why are the speed brakes always up on the taxi? It seems like they dont stow them until ready for the takeoff roll a lot of times. Is it connected with the prop pitch used for taxi somehow?

The Q400 has a "Flight/Taxi" switch that arms the spoilers. We select to "Flight" when cleared onto the runway for departure and they retract at appox 50% of power lever movement (if I'm recalling my systems correctly). Upon landing they deploy when the WOW switch is triggered, and then they retract again when we select "Taxi" during the after landing flow.

:)

I'd wager to say that your equipment hand-flies far, far better than a Gulfstream. It's a capable aircraft, but handles like a truck.

I'd wager against that. The Dash flies like an absolute piece of poorly designed crap. Which is what it happens to be.

The interesting thing is that the flight/taxi switch in the spoilers is magnetically held down in taxi and when you push up the power levers the switch automagically flips back into the flight position. Which begs the question, why the hell do we move the switch ourselves if it's going to flip itself anyway if(when) we forget. Sort of like the main bus tie...

The Q400 flies like a dumptruck...and I find it's pretty difficult to hand fly once the FA's get up and start moving around. Depending on the "size" of the FA's, it can be 500lbs moving back and forth.

We have some Captains that will push the power levers up quickly while taxiing onto the runway...def not SOP, but gets the job done.

The reason why have to do that Mr. Rocketman, is because our plane was designed by canadians...and french ones at that...question = answered!

haha... we roll in "dirt" which is field elevation rounded up to next hundred, I catch my self saying that all the time at 1000 AFE

Piedmont's spoilers deploy on landing too, but ours don't? Could never figure that out.

I think only the 100s and 400s deploy their roll spoilers as speed brakes on touchdown.

This post brought to you by beta from my iPhone.

Most of the 300's and 200's have the ground spoilers deactivated or not installed. The original intent of the system, and the reason why they are painted red is so the crew could do a visual check for the accumulation of snow/ice prior to take off. It was one of those cool yet redundant toys that some genius at Bombardier decided needed to go back on the Dash in the 400 incarnation. As if there aren't enough systems that actually have a useful purpose on the damn plane to worry about...

lol what? How much time do you have in the Dash?

The 8-100's had the same spoiler setup as the STOL designed Dash 7, since that's what the plane was based off of. Because the Dash 8 couldn't meet the stol performance of the -7, when they designed the 8-200 and -300 series they did away with the system. The Q-400 is a totally different beast, despite the same type. Spoilers are needed both for braking and roll control since it's substantially larger and heavier than the previous aircraft.

Edit: never seen a dash that wasn't painted white, blue, black, or gray.

And I've yet to see a spoiler panel painted red when the rest of the wing wasn't.
The q's at qx have red panels
