CZQX CPDLC Log-On

Morning!

Just wondering how often controllers are having to remind crews to log on to CZQX, or if everyone is so excited about the lack of position reports that this is not an issue.

Thanks!

I don't think there are any controllers from QX on the site, I can tell you however their neighbors in QM are finding it about a 60% participation rate on the Westbound flow, and about 30% on the eastbound flow.

Why?

Because coming westbound aircraft are already logged into CPDLC and as you know it automatically transfers. Coming into QM from BW it means they have to actually know to log on.

Some controllers are broadcasting its availability, but the perfectly honest, 90% of the time, its only used for frequency changes, for the purposes of actual air traffic control, CPDLC will be a long long time replacing the VHF radio in a strictly radar environment.

It is however, an excellent backup communication system, and also helpful for giving the odd discrete direct routing, or sending detailed information via FreeText.

I know you didn't ask for some of these answers, but there you go anyway :)

All in all, it's the future of ATC, but I think it's much more prevalent in a non-radar environment.

Oh and a PSA here:

Please stop announcing you're logged on to CPDLC... We know :)

We're just getting CPDLC approval on the 767s...already installed, we're just getting trained now. After 3 years of "Gander, Gander...?" on HF, I can assure you that I will not be forgetting to log on. :)

Cool, you got trained?

They more or less said, "Uhh.... HERE" to us and buried any information under the normal barrage of uncoordinated bulletins.

It was some online course that took an hour and gave me waaaay too much info about ADS.

"Just tell me what I gotta push!" :)

Too bad we can't uplink airplane to airplane. I'd tell that guy yapping on 123.45 to shut his pie hole and stop bitching about the "Westies"

Just put on your best cockney accent and say "If you're not a Manc, you're a wank!"

I wish our 123.45 monitor was in more than one location.

Every once and a while we catch you guys, but only within 200nm of here

Had an American pilot, talking to his ex wife flying a United flight... Awkward

Don't get too excited. It's like many things we do here...

That would be epic!

Are you the kind of guy who arrives fashionably late at the party and gets excited at a half eaten bowl of chips and browning guacamole? :)
Is that what I paid $50 for? :)

Actually yeah, at the last shop it was the FO's job to type all that crap in, and input the winds manually. 'Bout had enough of that!

Kinda funny though, at the new place, the FMC work is listed as the CA's duty. Occasionally I run by a guy who asks me if I want to put it in for practice. "Nah, that's alright."

It's not a "Pilot Flying" duty? Weird. Why would a man program another man's FMS? :)

Captain always programs the box here. For his jet it might be carry over from the whale freighters. On a 2 pilot crew, whoever does the outside also preflight the upper deck & main deck when it's loaded. It takes quite a bit of time.

From what I'm told, our procedures are basically 747 minus a couple engines. Flows included.

New York oceanic here. We never remind anyone to log on, because whether they are CPDLC or not is not our concern, it is not required and I couldn't care less if you are data link or HF. Generally though, CPDLC aircraft get better and faster service. All comm changes are automatically sent out by our system, data link and voice alike.
