Customized checklists?

Heya everyone,

Does anyone know if there are any rules/regulations against using a customized checklist for an aircraft? Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Piper's checklists as they come with the plane. Cessna's I can deal with, but not Piper's. The FBO I'm flying with now has customized checklists that they made up themselves (copied of the originals into a new format) so that you can get the information off the checklist easier. I'm working on doing the same thing into a format that I use. I have this little flip folder thingie with clear pages in it that holds all my checklists, instrument approach plates, flight plans and anything else I need for a flight. Could any of ya'll find anything wrong with this? I can't think up anything myself, but I figured I'd toss it out there. I'd use their checklist that they gave me, but it won't fit into my flip folder.

Cheers

John, I've made my own on several occaisions (Arrow, Tomahawk and Travel Air) using the POH and then putting it into a more "readable" format.

That way, I can format it as large or small as I want it.

As far as I see it - nothing wrong with it. Have your CFI look it over first though just be be safe.

Hey, Stan...do you ever stop and realize how far along in training you've gotten? My friend asked me something the other day and without thinking, I gave him an answer and followed it with ". . .but you might wanna check with a CFI about that to be sure". He just kinda looked at me and said "OK" with a grin.

I'm still waiting for the letter from the FAA saying that they've made a mistake!!

I do and it makes me all giggly inside.

I'll be glad when I have that "CFI" at the end of my name, so some of the cashflow can start reversing itself... albeit a trickle compared to a hemorrhage.

Yeah John, I've made my own checklists since I was a student pilot. No worries. In fact, my DE really likes the fact I do that. It helps to customize them a bit to suit the personal way I like to do things flow-wise.

Technically, for Part 91 operations, you don't even need to have or use a checklist (other than what's in the POH). 135 and 121 are different stories.

I used to fly with a retired 777 captain in his V-Tail and the only checklist he used was "CIGFRAMPS" and "GUMPS". I know most CFIs would have a stroke if they flew with pilots who didn't use checklists but I figure for most single-engine complex airlplanes an acronym works fine. Sure beats those pilots whose eyes are chained to a checklist while the planes flying them through the air.

I mainly use store bought checklists, but that's because I'm lazy. There's nothing wrong with making your own checklists, but use the POH when doing it. That way you don't accidentally leave something out (like Gear Down). My flight school is in the middle of standardizing their checklists, and the new one for the Seneca kicks major ass over any of the off the shelf ones.

Can't remember the last time I used a factory checklist; I use Checkmate Aviation's checkbook-style checklists, they rock.

Can't remember the last time I used a checklist. It sits in my flight bag, and comes out only if I have to look up maintenance codes or run emergency checklists. Everything is flows.

They don't have a "Blow Things Up" checklist?

Weapons.......Armed

Target............Destroyed

I made my own and added a few extra sections such as radio frequencies for the area and key performance numbers such as usable fuel, cruise rpms, 500 fpm descent rpms, V speeds, etc.

Excel works nice. You make all your fancy column boarders, emergency procedure titles in red whatever. Put cr*p on both sides landscape and laminate. Even your name at the bottom bc someone WILL WANT to steal your check list.

We use completely custom made checklists in the Falcon 900EX and Falcon 50EX's... I made both of the checklists, the FAA has no problem with Part 91 operations using custom checklists. The only thing you need to do is make sure you do not omit anything that is in the FOM Checklist. You can add things, but you can't leave anything out...

Though I use the Checkmate stuff, I'm a big fan of customized checklists. I picked up a copy of the Comair Academy Flight Standards Manual for the 172 and was very impressed by it--so much so that I'm trying to get CAP to adopt the format.

A buddy of mine who's a fellow CAP'er ('nuther former Spaatz weenie/Camp USAFA grad) and USAF B-1 pilot cooked up probably the most thorough checklist for the C-172 that I've come across to date, it includes emergency checklists that I'd never seen before, such as asymmetrical flap deployment and others. It's available for download in PDF format here.
