Cruisin around Socal

Several Sunday's ago, I decided to do a flight around Southern California, traveling from Redlands (L12), Hawthorne (HHR), Oxnard (OXR), and Victorville (VCV). Along the way, I took the LAX Mini-Route and flew along the coast between Santa Monica and Oxnard. Was quite a flight. Hope you enjoy.

Over LAX at 2500'. Notice the 747 (I think) departing 25L.

I don't think I have enough runway (only 15,050' of runway)

This photo is from another flight, but it is the same airplane that I took the Socal flight. (This was on a solo X-C up to Vacaville via Mariposa Yosemite. I had stopped for gas and snapped this photo at MPI during the Spring).

Very nice pictures

Why the 15k foot runway in place though?

Thanks. About the runway? TBH, I'm really not sure. This used to be George Air Force base is my understanding. Other than that, not really sure. It is the second longest runway in the states though (at least according to Wikipedia's definition of runways). It was fun touching down, then taking off and cruising at a 100 feet the last 2 miles of the runway.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. Did you have to do a short field landing at Victorville? :)

Victorville, aka Southern California Logistics airport, formerly known as George AFB, is one of the big airliner storage depots, where airlines park planes not in use. It's dry, so they don't need to deal with rust or mildew.

Thanks for the photos.

As far as VCV's runway length, one reason it is still maintain is because of the number of large aircraft that come in and find their final resting place in the desert.

edit: nvm, aloft beat me.

I've always wanted to fly to this airport. It sure is pretty.

Very nice. I know a few people that were in the Air Force and lived in Victorville while the base was still open.
