CRM at The Aviator?

Hey guys,

I'm just a little curious. I know that the airlines are looking for good practice of Crew Resource Management (CRM) from new hires. Is this something that you guys practice at Ari-Ben? Is there any formal training in CRM there?

Thanks dudes,
Levon

What's CRM

In my opinion, you'll learn all you really need to know about CRM by instructing for a while. It's really not rocket science or something you need a formal class for. I came up before CRM was a buzzword. My airline decided about 10 years ago they needed a two day class on the subject. Total waste of time, though I scored highest in the class on this silly outdoor survival situation prioritization exercise. Still not sure what that had to do with CRM.

you are probably right, but I know that a lot of the guys at my local FBO have no idea what CRM is and dont believe in communication while doing some safety pilot work....i.e. traffic monitoring while under the hood...etc.

All in all. I just dont want to be put into the same downright unsafe situations at the Aviator as I do here at my FBO

I'm going to have to strongly disagree with that opinion. I was serving as an FE in a crew aircraft before and after CRM was introduced into training programs. It has turned aviation upside down, with mostly pros but a few cons, and flight instructing does very little in teaching you to be a good follower, which is probably the most important concept for good First Officers to understand.

To answer your question AFdude, the Aviator has absolutely no formal training for CRM, safety, or standardization, which are all prime keywords in any Air Force flying squadron (I take it that's where you draw your aviation experience from).

This doesn't make the Aviator a bad school, because there are definite pros to the three cons that I mentioned. However, I think that these programs, if properly implemented, would put the Aviator at the top of a short list of worthy flight schools.

Lastly, if you don't get that CRM training, the airline that hires you will get you up to speed. They’ll give you formal training, but you will truly learn CRM when you're in the sim with your training partner. Unfortunately, my sim partner (another CFI) has no prior CRM experience, but we’re making progress!

Well it's good to know that CRM can be picked picked up while in training at an airline. Eventhough I am only an Avionics Tech with the Air Force, I still hear and see plenty about CRM. Heck we get monthly newsleters on it.. haha.. Also, I get another dose of CRM in my ERAU courses.

All in all, it's not that CRM is a stranger to me, but it would be nice to practice a little communication here and there. I know that I sure could have used it the other day when my safety pilot didnt pick up on the traffic just off our right wing...

So was I, and I've noticed no difference with the before or after. From your avtar I'm wondering if you were military. I wasn't, perhaps that explains our difference in perception.

DE727: Yes, it may be that it affected civilian aviation differently. Maybe the civilian aircrews functioned a little more like humans to begin with, so the impact was less dramatic. Nonetheless, I know there are still a few crusty old CA's out there hanging on to the Cockpit King days.

Ivan: How's it going? Not to be too correct, but I'm still an FE in the Air Force, just a happy Reservist now instead of slave...eh-hem...I mean Active Duty.

oh, i didnt know you still went to drill.... im thinking about getting back to my unit when i go back home. If they still want me.

Maybe its a mistake... damn security forces.

You're an FE so I'm guessing you're out of Patrick?
I'm at Homestead.

Nope...McGuire. I commute every ~60 days to fly a local for currency and do a couple RUTAs.

With ExpressJet, I'll be based out of EWR, which is only an hour-and-a-half from WRI, so I can supplement the crappy FO pay with tons of Reserve duty.

Ha yeah.. At least we can back up the FO pay with the big fat UTA checks.

That's good that you'll be close so you can do man days and supplement the income.

good Idea. perhaps i'll get put near a reserve base too.
