CRJ Headsets

Anybody have any experience with either the Telex ANR 500, Telex ANR 850, or the Sennheiser HMEC 25-KA ANR in the CRJ. I was told the wind noise can be a bitch and not to mess around with the "walkman" style headsets.

Any advice would be appreciated.

We sell a lot of headsets in our pilot shop, and I have heard that same thing about RJ's. Although I have not flown one......yet.

It's not THAT bad but yeah when you're low and fast ~ i.e. 10,000 feet and 300 knots ~ but it's not bad at all up high or down low and slow. I use Telex 750's and foam earplugs when I remember to grab some - that works fine and without the ear plugs work fine as well. Alot of guys still wear the DC's.

I have resisted ANR technology simply because of having to screw with the battery packs but I'm thinking about triing the Telex 850's since there is no power source required(gets it's power from the jet) - I talked to a dealer that sells the 850's and he said he has sold quite a few to CRJ pilots and never had one returned. He said they are by far and away outselling the Sennheisers.

I used the HMEC 25-KA's in a former life time in corporate turboprops and absolutley hated them. Battery usage was horrendous and they were worthless without power. They were also (in my opinion) poorly designed and the plastic construction was somewhat fragile. That has been about 6 years ago so maybe(I hope) their quality has gotten better over that time.

Back when I was a civilian ... I use the Telex ANR 500 flying a CE-650, I will never fly with anything less than an ANR type headset again. I got about 50 hrs. out of a 9v battery, not to bad, and the hassle factor of dealing witht the extra wire and battery pack, minimal compared to the comfort and reduced fatique and improved ATC / Crew communications. You can't go wrong with an ANR type headset. I'm using the Bose headset in the BE-200 and like them even better than the DC noise cancelling. The bigger headsets aren't neccessary for flying the jet, but I still recommend a ANR type.

I've come full circle with headsets in the CRJ. Started off with my ANR David Clarks that I had for years flying turboprops... said, "I'm a jet pilot now and need the lightweights." Bought the Telex 750 walkman headset on ebay for $125. Didn't care too much for them.... I don't like wearing ear plugs and couldn't get enough volume from the audio panel... sold them to an unsuspecting new jet FO- he's still cursing my name!

so back to ebay, I bought the Telex 5X5's for $55. They're the ones with the little boom mic and ear bud- didn't like those either. My feeble brain couldn't process everything coming into one ear and my ear started to hurt with that ear plug in after about 5 hours of flying.

So then I picked up the Telex ANR500 from the local FBO- 450 smak-a-roos! They worked great! Good noise attenuation, light. A great headset!

But I was wooed by the Sennheiser lightweight ANR headset.
Back to ebay! I sold my ANR500 to our very own FlyChicaga and picked up the Sennheiser from a Southwest guy for $400.

That, too, is a great headset. Good noise attenuation, very lightweight. I found, though, that flying some of the older, louder airplanes I got to the point that I was irritable at the end of my shifts- I was annoyed by the aircraft noise. Maybe my hearing was getting deadened because as the day went on I found I kept turning the volume up- then getting annoyed by the controllers whose radio voice was louder. ugh. I couldn't win.... so now I'm back to the venerable David Clarks!

...I think maybe next I'll try the Bose.... it's all tax deductible, right???

Another thing I was told to consider the obvious size benefits the lightweight sets have in your flight case. With multiple Jepp manuals, POH, QRH, enrout charts etc...I have been told it is difficult to carry a "full-size" headset easily. The smaller folding headsets are more practical in that manner as well....

Just another thing to factor into my decision.

The Telex Airman ANR 850 is the best in my opinion. Check it out HERE
It works so well (the ANR), that it's best to either leave one ear uncovered (which is perfectly comfortable) or use the intercom. Super comfortable. My second choice is the non-ANR, walkman ears type, Telex 750. These are much less expensive and work just about as good. Unless you're flying a REALLY loud jet, I can't imagine needing or using the DC's. But hey, that's just me.

I've been wearing the Telex 750 for 3 1/2 years in the CRJ. Works just fine. I do wear earplugs, but no-one says they need to be mashed so far into your ear canal that you're deaf.

On some CR1s and CR2s, the "old" design for the windshield wipers makes more noise than the new style. The CR7s and CR9s are quieter up front than any CR2 I've ever flown, and I can actually do a trip on the CR7/9 without earplugs.

And yes, the small size of the 750 leaves plenty of room for my Jepps, manuals, and camera.
