crash at iad?

So, im driving to the airport(jyo) for an ifr flight yesterday morning and im talking to my buddy as we pass iad on rt 28. i see a huge plume of black smoke...real thick and dangerous looking. we are both like, damn i hope nothing happened at the airport...etc. So i call flight service from the car to file our flight plan and ask if there was anything going on at dulles....any runway closures or anything because i saw black smoke coming up, he laughed and said,"are you asking if there was a crash"??? well, i dont have anything here on any activities at dulles, and there are no notams at iad. it was probably "construction exhaust" was his answer.So, i get home and turnon the news and low and behold "dulles airport has emergency preparedness drill" as one of the top stories. youd think the guy would have known. Anyone see any of the action at iad? glad to see it was only a drill, but come on leesburg FSS....on a better note, my instructor just got hired with american eagle....class date may 24. looks like i gotta find a new person to finish my comm with. And i logged 1.0 actual yesterda, and flew and landed from the right today. good weekend of flying.
 
Wouldn't bag on the FSS too much. When I do my ARFF drills and we're utilizing the burn pit or the mock-up trainer, that thing puts off a huge plume of black smoke since it's a burning aircraft simulator. On the notification side, all we do is notify tower of what we're doing and when. There's no NOTAM, not even an (L) NOTAM, and certainly no way an FSS briefer, in a building 200 miles away would know.
 
yeah, i can see your point, but leesburg FSS is only about 15 miles nw of dulles. I jsut thought it was weird he knew nothing....but i guess my real beef was that he thought i was in idiot...laughing at me about a crash. guess i wasnt too far off track now was I? Seems like Ill be seeing that a little more often now that Dulles is supposedly the only training center like this of its kind on the east coast.
