Crappy Weather In GA

What would you do if this is the radar picture that you saw, and you were scheduled to fly FTY-PDK-MAC-TLH-MAC-ATL-FTY?

In a single engine aircraft, partially at night, with no WX radar? Oh, and the forecast says that it's going to get worse . . .

As you walk into the chief pilot's office with a print out of the radar and TAF, start by saying:
"Sir, I don't feel it is in the interest of safety to even attempt my flight this evening."

But then again, I have no freight dawg experience.

I would prolly get in a fetal position and cry!!

Seriously Lloyd you have the 210!! It's a flying tank!

Just remember to punk the storms as you put a hole through them. :)

I have to go ORL - ATL - JAX - ORL tonite, so I'm in the same boat. It's gonna be a night for bright cockpit lights thats for sure.

Jaron, you're gonna laugh at me for doing this, but I deviated around weather in Iowa today... :buck:

Not such good weather up here either. Juneau is having their first official blizzard in 17 years. 65mph winds and snow make life miserable.:banghead:

As I told you on the phone Lloyd, I think you're a complete wuss for not going.

(I'm joshin' ya'll, BTW, just in case anybody missed it, I wouldn't go either!)

Well, before I made the initial post, I called Dispatch and told them that I wasn't comfortable making the flight. They immediately forwarded me to the D.O. (I think that they were hoping he'd lay it on me . . . ), who supported me in my decision.

I went on duty at my normal time, and sat at the airport. Dispatch refused to release me - they wanted me to stand by. They said that they were hoping that it would "clear up", so that I could salvage parts of the flight. Personally, I think I was being "punished" . . . hehehe.

Since the FBO was full of pilots NOT flying due to the weather, I sat in my car and watched movies. Compared to some places that I've sat for 8.5 hours, this was cake!

This was actually the first time that I've ever canceled a flight because of weather. I'm sure that there were lots of pilots that went ahead and flew, as well. Oh, well. They pay me to make tough decisions, right?

And it was a good decision. The entire SE was jacked up today. I was visiting my parents yesterday/today (they live in Nashville), and their dog went absolutely nuts from the weather. Flying southwest to Houston was pretty uncomfortable for a while--off to the southeast it looked really solid, with tops well above us after we leveled off. I can't imagine having to fly around in that crud without radar at night.

Well I made it from ORL to ATL alright. At one point in the flight JAX center was working myself and a labquest airplane and made the comment " so do you guys have a plan for this or what". For the most part it was uneventful, except for one part I got rocked. All of a sudden my radar started painting cells like mad, I'm talking like only 5 - 10 miles ahead of me. I didnt have many options, as I was already in turbulence that I would not feel very good about making a sharp turn in. I continued and made it through to the other side, then after that things calmed down.

ATL was a mess though, the taxi ways were a parking lot when I landed.

Now I just have to go from ATL to JAX... hopefully most of the junk is moved out to sea by then.

There's only one reason to have a captain on an airplane, that's to say NO when it's necessary. Otherwise we're all just airplane drivers.

Good job.

Well guys I ended up makin into JAX last night, but it was pretty hairy. I'll tell the story later on today when I wake up.

Just curious if in hindsight you think that a no-go decision might have been a wiser choice?
