Cover letters?

Has anyone ever given their resumes to the regional airlines with a cover letter included? I work full-time for Allegheny Airlines (Piedmont in two weeks), a.k.a. US Airways Express, and quite a few pilots told me to throw my resume in at the airlines as soon as I get my multi-engine rating, even though I'd have a very minute chance of even getting looked at.

My thinking is that adding a cover letter would be beneficial to me because it would allow me to highlight my experience within the airline industry and provide reasons for why I'd make a good F/O. To counteract that, however, I wonder if a cover letter would only make those reading it get bored before they even got to the resume...

Thoughts, suggestions anyone...??

Thanks,

Ed

I have no answer to this question-- just another question. What do you all think of putting your resume out as soon as possible after getting your ratings? Is it beneficial? I'll be working on my Commercial multi within the next month-- but I've already got my multi private and 94 hours of multi time... realistically I could have the 100 hours multi for companies like Mesa-- should I send them a resume with 400tt 100me?

I personally don't know the answer to that because I have my commercial single-engine rating (with instrument) and am about to get my ME. So as of now I don't have any time in twins.

However, pilots I have talked to at work say it never hurts to throw it into the pile, and just update it often with new hour totals. That's what I plan on doing. Actually, I had one guy with Shuttle America tell me that he'd walk my resume in to the chief pilot once I get my multi-engine rating. As much as I'd like that though, I won't believe it till I see it!

I agree that you should send a cover letter if possible.

Just be aware that they usually go straight to the trash.

Well, so do most resumes actually ...

Remember - the absolute BEST way to get an interview is to have a captain for the airline walk in your resume. Cover letter will not be necessary in this case.
