Could it be? Feeling human again!

Well, on average the "demand" runs about every hour to two hours. She never has time to pump a bottle to store up for someone else to give her a break, and Gavin's still hungry. He actually drained her to the point of being dry last night.

We tried the swaddling thing, but if he can't kick his legs, he gets REALLY mad. I have a tendency to kick the covers off in the middle of the night, so I think he gets that from me.

No letting him "cry it out" right now. We both agree that he's too young for that. Maybe in a couple of months.

On a positive note, WE GOT SLEEP LAST NIGHT! He only woke up twice to eat, so maybe the limited supplementing (4 whopping oz yesterday) seems to work. Then again, it's possible he was having a massive growth spurt, and it's winding down. He's had a good day today, too. Took him to Memphis to see my parents, and took him to the mall. He hasn't been fussy constantly like he has been, and he was awake and looking around most of the time.

I know bfing advocates will hate me for saying it....but after having done both, with both kids, I am really a big formula fan. It's so much easier to be a mentally healthy and happy parent when you can take turns, only have to do it every 4 hours, they sleep so long at night, and generally seem happier, at least mine have. Plus the poop is a whole lot better lol. So if you just can't get to a good place, and she doesn't want to keep going the way it is now, I hope she knows that it is ok to use formula! I don't know what her experiences have been thus far, but I know a lot of moms who are hysterical with sleep deprivation and are afraid to use formula because of the anti-formula women, I hope that no one has made her feel that way. There are pros and cons of both, for me the formula has more pros.

Dude, remind me not to eat the cereal if I even drop by for brekkie!

After reading Kell, Amber and the wife's post, I felt my wife and I were lucky. My babies were well trained at NICU.
grin.gif
They are about 3 months old now(6 weeks premature though). Now, We can feeding and change them at 10PM at night. They can sleep till next morning around 6AM. That makes me and my wife behave more human.

Kell, my babies were not always easy to calm down. I put them down in front of fire place(not too close, of course). They spread and pass right out.

My wife also put some rice cereal into milk bottles(breast or forumla) for last feeding of the day. Hope it helps.

Ok, I should really stop butting in and start minding my own business, but I wanted to say something about that, please don't be offended. There is a lot of research (for what that's worth) that supports that babies should not be fed cereal until 6 months. Some of the major risks from places of info:

"at least one study has recently showed that early introduction of rice cereal (prior to 4 months of age) is a risk factor for the development of diabetes"

"Introducing solids before 4 months might cause food allergies."

"when bottle-feeding became very popular, rice cereal was often put into the bottle at a very early age. What were the results? Most children seemed to thrive. A small number of children, though, did not tolerate the addition, because their sucking and swallowing actions were not yet fully coordinated. They inhaled small amounts of the rice cereal into their lungs, which led to pulmonary problems."

"Babies are born with a wonderful mechanism for knowing how much food they need. During the early months, they take their cues from the volume of what they drink. Adding cereal derails this mechanism. It forces them to take in deceptively large amounts of calories. It teaches them to overeat."

"What is the age for starting cereal?
Always ask your doctor when starting cereal is best for your baby. Every baby is different, so age is not always an indication.
Physical signs baby may be ready are:
Sits with support and has good head control.
Doubled birth weight and weighs at least 13 pounds
Continues to be hungry after 8-10 breast feedings or 32 ounces of formula in a day."

"It's actually dangerous," Dr. Elbirt says. "Young babies aren't ready to digest cereal yet; it can make them feel ill. Also, introducing cereal too soon can increase the risk of developing allergies."

"The time to start semisolid or solid foods depends on your baby's development. The baby's digestive system or immature kidneys may not be ready for solid foods before four to six months of age. Food allergies and choking can cause problems when feeding solids too early. Check with your doctor before beginning to feed solid foods.

Following are some signs of physical readiness for feeding solid foods.

Your baby can sit up with support and can control his or her head.
Your baby can control upper body movements and pull forward when food is wanted or move back when full.
Your baby's tongue doesn't keep pushing food out"

Sorry if I was offensive, but I just like to help people read about stuff before making decisions. In the end though, you are the parents and if that is what you are most comfortable with then do it.

Michelle, you are not offend me at all.

In my triplets' case, there are 2 babies who get hungry easily. The other one can't handle that much food at all.

They are about triple their birth weight about now. They were born about 4 lbs and plus some. They do get ungry easily though. By the way, where do you get these info? Can you post a link?

Doug, I agree with you on study. The best example is MSG. From what I read so far, in 1960s, MSG was classified as a "Cancer - causing agent". A decade later, another research indicated something else. You got to wonder what those study coming from.

It's experpts from many sites, some from gerber who even has an interest in babies eating cereal yet still say to wait. Just do a search for "starting solids too soon". There is plenty of support against it, and unlike most topics such as artificial sweetener, there is no "pro" sites that I found, everything was pretty much against it.

We had lactation (sp?) "breastfeeding" class @ the hospital tonight. I was the only male in attendance, wife likes the support and says that this way when she stops remembering things from being exhausted I'll be able to help with stuff we've been told ...

... and the nurse conducting the class said this very thing about early foods and allergies.

Yup, peanut butter, strawberries, and a few other foods can also cause early food allergies that might not have occured if they hadn't been consumed that early. Of course there is no 100% fool proof science on anything, but since it doesn't hurt them to wait, I figure why not just assume the risks are valid and wait until the suggested time.

And WTG for being there w/ your wife! My husband came to all the pregnancy stuff with me, it really helped me to feel supported and it makes me like him just a little more! LOL

Not quite ... there was a video on proper breastfeeding, and even though I was there because my wife wanted me there, I had a trouble watching the video because all I kept thinking was the rest of the women are thinking I'm some kind of pervert and just wanted to look at and talk about breasts.

Funny thing about the movie was all the mothers had on makeup like they were ready to hit up the town and some w/ jewlry, not looking like they just delivered a baby, needed some sleep, kinda rough, etc.

Nah, you did not just want to look at and talk about Breasts, you wanted to touch some too!

Touching the breasts of someone that is nursing an infant can get messy fast. Not that I would know or anything.....

Okay, I'll be quiet now.
