Cost to fill Oxygen

I've been thinking about picking up a 20 cubic foot portable oxygen system.

Anyone have any idea on how much a FBO charges to re-fill these?

Any recommendations on where to pick one up or a brand?

Cylinder size of your choice, I have an E.

You'll want a CGA540 valve, since they are the most common for aviation, and a simple adjustable regulator to fit.

You can get masks and T fittings for passengers at your local medical supply house. My complete setup came to under $100, shipped.

The cylinders are pretty much identical to aviation cylinders, they may even have the same manufacturer.

This may be a silly question but...

If your standard medical oxygen system can be used (for $100) why spend $400 on an aviation grade? Certainly, there must be a reason.

EDIT: Removed original response.

I'll re-post -

I guess I am somewhat skeptical regarding a standard medical oxygen system vs. an aviation system. There is a considerable price discrepancy for one.

It has aviation written on the side?

Many aviation systems have fancy devices designed to save oxygen, or flow meters, and those nice bags and decals.

But that said, I bought this system because I saw no real difference in functionality. My system works just fine and my $30 pulse oximeter ($99 from Mountain High) tells me I'm still alive at 18,000.

All o2 is aviation o2. Why would a o2 supplier stock three types? Everything comes from Liquid Oxygen whis is pure and very dry.

The cost really depends on where you are in the country and the fbo filling it. It typically is cheaper around the rockies (where portables get filled on a regular basis). Anywhere out East is way overpriced (mostly because they usually only do it for large aircraft with dedicated systems). I've seen it as high as a $100 or as low as $20.

Can't breathe welder's oxygen? Aw, horsefeathers, as my dad used to say! Show me the rule!
Oxygen is oxygen. It is the substance that matters, not the intended purpose. These days, welding, medical, and aviation oxygen are exactly the same. All three come from the same tank of liquid oxygen (LOX). The liquified form is the cleanest, purest, driest form of oxygen (or any substance) you'll find anywhere.

Oxygen, Oxygen, Who's Got the Oxygen?

As long as people believe that they'll keep paying $100 a refill.

You buy o2 from a FBO because you think you have a legal or moral obligation?

I know, it's funny when people try and do things the correct way.
Guys,
I was referring to the fact that merit had posted his clarification (about the delivery system vs the actual oxygen) prior to fholbert reiterating that oxygen is oxygen is oxygen.

Re-read what I wrote. Maybe it doesn't come off that way...but that was the intent. Just to generate a chuckle. Don't get your panties in a wad.

...and no. We buy O2 from the FBO because in our GOM it says we can't remove the bottle from the nose. Mx has to. When we're out on the road, the FBO can come over and fill 'er up for us though. If it were a Part 91 bird, I'm pretty sure boss-man would take it elsewhere to re-fill...or have his "buddy" (A&P, IA) do it. It definitely isn't because of a moral obligation. I guess it's a legal obligation, since it's in the GOM, but that's getting in to other issues.

I know some the guys at my airport take theirs down to the local scuba shop and have them filled for 8 dollars.
