Most people believe it was replaced by satellites, and they could be right, but satellites take a lot time to move into position for surveilance relatively speaking. I still find it hard to believe they shut that program down without a replacement, manned or unmanned, and wonder what such a program would cost.

Conical contrails...

Complex machines are expensive to maintain and operate. News flash!

Everyone's favorite fighter, the F-14, cost $7,000 to $10,000 per hour in the late 1980s.

Yeah...but $1500/hr is better than $11,000/hr, which is way better than four times that.

Honestly, I'd have liked to see a low cost COIN airplane like the Tucano or the air tractor in a similar role as the A10 and we simply mass produce the heck out of them. What's better, 10 air tractors providing CAS at $1000/hr or 1 A10? I dunno, I'm not a military guy, but I'd suspect that the having a slew of light attack and drone aircraft would beat out one super airplane for the CAS mission.

I've seen doughnuts and french fries over the hills above KBUR, I'm not a conpriacy guy and whatever it costs I'd imagine we're already paying for it. I suppose in 20 yrs we'll know what's going on today, I'm just curious, perhaps it's the racer in me.

I have to assume your kidding. The A-10 was built around a very large gun and the concept that with some protection the pilot would be able to defend troops on the ground. Are you willing to be a Tucano pilot with a knife, albeit there are 9 behind you with their knives, or would you rather be in the A-10 carrying a large gun? And who do you think the troops would rather see?
