Cool places to fly in the SouthEast

As Im trying to use the freedom of my ticket a little more and build that part 61 cross country time, I was wondering if any peeps had any cool places that they fly into in the SE, particularly close to the atlanta area?

Hilton Head, SC is cool. (HXD)

As is Key West, but mucho $$$, and I suppose "close" is a relative term...

Nashville is an alright stop....some pretty cool things to see, depending on what type of thing is your bag....

Go into Memphis (not really the Southeast..) one night and watch the FEDEX push...it's pretty neat!!

If you're flying into Nashville, check out the Cornelia-Fort Airpark in downtown Nashville. Due to its proximity to Nashville International, the arrival and departure procedures are "interesting" (and the pattern altitude is only about 560' AGL, if I recall correctly).

For the best in grass strip flying, visit Moontown Airport, near Huntsville, AL. They have a big fly-in in May - always lots of fun. The airport is very well maintained, but can get soggy if there's too much rain. Call first to check the field conditions and fly-in schedule (256-852-9781).

Asheville, N.C. is a nice flight. Spectacular scenery.

Really nice when there's a little bit of snow on the ground....

I flew out of Cornelia Fort in Nashville for my first 25hrs, so such a low pattern seemed normal to me. It's small and scenic, but not as pretty as some of the airports in North Carolina.

One airport I've always wanted to fly into is Andrews-Murphy in far western NC. It's in this beautiful little valley, with some of the highest mountains west of the Mississippi nearby.

And Ocala has "Rachel" - no one fills a pair of jeans like she does!

I second Andrews-Murphy. I've flown in there 6-7 times and I never get tired of the scenery or buzzing the cows in the traffic pattern (The valley is very narrow). We should fly up there in the near future.

Andrews-Murphy is KRHP. I flew in there about a month ago. The people at the FBO were very friendly. The crew car was out of service, so the owner (I guess) let me borrow his personal car to go into town to get something to eat.

I flew in from the West an had to maintain about 6000-7000 almost until you get to the valley where the airport is located. Then you can just fly up and down this valley until getting to pattern altitude, which is about 2700. When departing, you do the same. Also, ATC may not be able to identify you until reaching 5000 feet or so.

If you want some fun, visit Memphis (KMEM) ... Wilson Air Center is without a doubt the best FBO in the country, and watching FedEx at work is a sight to see ... they keep the pavement warm up there all night long. I love going in and out of MEM.

AVL is pretty, but the FBO is forever on my excrement list because of their stupid "you must be 25 to drive the crew car" policy. I went in there, in a brand-new $600,000 Bonanza, at age 24, and I couldn't use their POS Escort to drive to McDonald's ... I canceled my 50-gallon fuel order and left.

I agree with you about Wilson Air - they are great! Just spent a weekend for my brother's birthday. Went to Graceland. Checked in to the Heartbreak Hotel. Had some ribs (although not at the Rendezvous, my favorite). Rode to the restaurant in the Pink Caddilac. I used to always go to Signature, esp. Memphis/Nashville/CLT/SAV - but I was very happy with Wilson.

Oh, and since this is "Southeast" flying - how about the Cayman Caravan! Key West, over the top of Cuba, saw lots of water from the air and later under. Air show while we were there. A little pricey, but worth a try at least once.

And no, we didnt experience the over-the-water "automatic rough" although on our return we did get one scary engine "harumph" while we were over Epcot. Damn, I hate it when it does that!

John there use to be a girl that worked at Executive(Air BP) at KORL was named Rachel that was a "hottie". My instructor "dated" her for a while. He seem to always come in a little tired..not sure why...

No way! A CFI was dating Rachel? I want pictures!

Yes the ORL Rachel is also a hottie. She is working the line nowadays.

Asheville NC (AVL) like others said is a great airport, beatiful, and especially at this time of year when its snowing.

Couldn't agree with you more on that one. My girlfriend and I flew out for a long weekend in the Skyhawk, and we were treated just as if we had taxied up in a Gulfstream!!!!

I send the FBO service request 2 weeks prior, stating our date and time of arrival. We taxied up and they had "N92659 - Welcome To Memphis!!" flashing on the Marquee!! Before we could even get out of the airplane, they had our bags in the back of the taxi, and told me to call them whenever I had a free moment and let them know when they should pull the plane out for us!!

I was still in awe when we got to the hotel!!!
