does anyone have real figures on how much money it is to convert canadian or european licenses to FAA licences? (checkrides, writtens, groundschool)

Theoretically a Private Pilot Certificate can be issued on the basis of your ICAO-compliant country's Private Pilot license at no cost, just a paperwork exercise. These days however, the FAA needs to do special verification of your license with your country's issuing authority and they (the country of issue) may charge for this service.

As for Instrument, Commercial etc. it would be really tough to give accurate numbers since it depends greatly on where you go for your training, who you have as your instructor and how proficient you currently are in flying.

I do quite a few ATP ratings for Canadian citizens. It's not really a "conversion", as you have to pass a written exam and take a checkride like everyone else. The main hassle is paperwork. Your current Canadian license must be verified by the US Dept of Justice, who will send copies of the verification to you and the local FAA office where you will do the training. This can take upwards of 60 days. You will also need to obtain a US medical certificate.

There are some minor differences in procedures and regulations, so it would be worthwhile to study those before arrival. Most everything else is the same. Costs? At my company we do an ATP written & flight course (10 hrs) for $2195. Add $300 for a checkride, and $100 or so for a medical certificate.
