Contract pilots

I am looking to do some general contracting in the Phenom 300. I welcome any input from pilots with experience contracting, things to be aware of, tips, etc. Thank you.

  • Don’t undercut
  • Get good expense tracking software
  • Setup a business entity
  • A day is a day, so charge the same for sit days as you would for flying days
  • Make sure you’re covered on insurance policies, most have an open policy for pilots with X amount of time
  • Network as much as possible in the FBO
  • Try not to put big expenses like fuel on your credit card

Named on insurnace with a waiver of subrogation. Anything less and you leave yourself open to the insurnace company coming after you if there is a loss. Open pilot only covers the owner. The waiver of subrogation prevents them from trying to recoup their losses against a contract pilot.

I would love to do this as well. Is there a place to put your name in? I fly the Challenger 604 and classic Global.

There is a bunch of them.
-IFCC (they staff all of EJM accounts contract needs)
-Jet Aviation
-Crew Blast
-ACASS

You will have more success though by networking in recurrents. Make it known you have availability for contract work. Word of mouth is king

yup these are all spot on, @BravoHotel

I only did corporate/fractional with some contract on the side for a brief period but hold STRONG to these, it only helps the industry as a whole.

I would emphasize having things written in a contract..the horror stories I've heard from pilots waiting for a check is insane.

I'd say read that ACASS contract very thoroughly. They also pay well below standard daily rates and don't pay for ground transportation from your home to the airport.

Adding on to these two great posts: Don't commit to any trip without something in writing before leaving the house or incurring any expenses prior to a trip (airfare, hotels, etc.). At least until you have a relationship with an operator that you can trust. The professional pilot pages have at least one post a day about a contract pilot being stiffed by AXBYCZ operator and asking how to take legal action.
