Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

ON a lighter note, did anyone see the full page ad in USA today this week for the Continental Express contract talks?

Dunno if she is a real pilot or not, but female First Officer was a BABE!!!!

Is it often that female pilots are that cute?

yikes...

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

...hence my attraction to female pilots. Looks, brains, and something to talk about!

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

There are also posters in Terminal B at IAH. This is a majority-COEX terminal. Themes include:
[strikeout]Contract '02[/strikeout]
[strikeout]Contract '03[/strikeout]
Contract '04?

Also, a map of all of COEX's destinations...that includes destinations across the US, and many to Mexico and Canada...with the quote, 'Regional Airline?'.

It's my understanding that they have done informational picketing as well at IAH. Not sure about other hubs.

My instructor was just hired by them this past week. Makes you wonder how much bargaining power the employees will have with new guys wagging their tongues at the front door...

Does anyone have a link to the picture?

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

I saw one on monday? in LAX at the SKYW crew lounge too. I was kinda like huh?

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

Unfortunately, we ran a similar ad in the Milwaukee Journal back in 1995 and even though starting salary was $14,400, the general publics response was "So... We want low airfares".

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

Maybe Mesa management will run a full page ad telling people they can keep fares low if they keep pilot costs low.

On a completely unrelated topic I got a ground school date of June 28th coming up. HA!

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

Unfortunatately, the general public would eat it up.

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

I say we all get together then and run a full page ad in USA Today with a big picture of a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle with a Southwest Logo on the tail. See how they like that.

Dang...I tell ya man...if pilot's don't get enough money we certainly make up for it in negative propaganda sometimes. Sheesh

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

Let me tell you some fresh information about how the general public feels about pilots.

ATL got absolutely ROCKED with thunderstorms today so we took a 2 hour delay in Greensboro today until ATC would release our flight after the storm subsided.

CHING! CHING! (sound of the cabin to cockpit interphone chime) The flight attendant calls. "I've got a passenger here that was talking to her husband on the cellphone in Marietta and he says that the skies are clear."

"Well, all of our weather reports show a nasty thunderstorm over the field and besides, ATC has a ground stop on all traffic."

In the background, I could clearly discern the passenger screaming "They're lying! The weather's fine! My husband says it's fine and I want to go!"

The captain says, "Tell her that I don't have the ability to tell ATC to remove the ground stop and issue me clearance to depart for Atlanta".

Oh joy.

Another hour of dealing with upset passengers on the telephone with their loved ones throught the Atlanta metropolitan area who are trying to convince us that the weather is fine. Wonderful.

So the weather clears eventually, we launch, spend 50 minutes circumnavigating thunderstorms, dodge a bunch on arrival and pull into the gate. It's raining pretty good, it's windy and I think I did a pretty good job landing the jet.

Instead of "Hey, thanks for erring on the side of safety", about 15 various passengers scream at me about not being honest about the weather. How the weather is FINE and I need to learn to be more honest.

People forgot about the Delta L1011 in DFW, the Air Tran DC-9 in ATL, the Air South DC-9 with the dual flameout in hail in ATL, etc. Flying has become SO SAFE that Molly McButter in the back of the jet thinks she's got credence trying to instruct a professional flight crew, and an FAA route inspector who was on the jumpseat, about weather... Because her husband's got a cellphone in Marietta and knows better than a captain, a first officer an FAA inspector who was a Vietnam vet, and entire cadre of company meteorologists and an entire ATC system that shut the airport down.

A300Capt and DE727UPS, ya ain't missing JACK!

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

I was deadheading on a flight that went Single Engine. Capt came over and gave his we are making an unscheduled stop at ABC b/c of the engine blah blah blah...After he got off the PA, about three dings from passengers all wondering if they were still going to be able to make their connections. Landed at the other airport, and my crew and I have to go to the ticket counter like everyone else, to get a voucher for a cab to the airport we were supposed to go to and people were honestly Irate there travel plans were different then when they left. Unreal!

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

Yeah....I know. Don't have to tell me. Every time I fly on a pax airline it just reminds me how nice it is to fly boxes.

Wait...don't kids come up to you and want you're autograph like in "Catch me if you can"? That would be cool.

If I only didn't have to wear a brown uniform....

Since I've been doing day flying. I've noticed how hard pax pilots bug ATC for a smooth altitude and complain about turbulence. We don't worry much about it.

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

Doug, (and all the other pax flying pilots),

You have my sympathies. Even before I started flying I always had a respect for the pilots up front. I just don't understand how peple get so upset when they get to where they were going to in the safest possible manner. I would much rather be late and arrive safely than taking some unnecessary risk. Does the non-flying public really think that just because Betty Lou;s husband says the wx is clear you'll just go, "Oh, Ok we can leave than.". Geesh, Are they really that clueless?

I be sure to to stop up front when I go to Vegas and thank the pilots for a safe ride.

Yep, as I was reading your post, Doug, I was thinking the whole time that not once have I ever had to explain a delay of any kind to the boxes in the back!

Not once have I ever had to bug ATC about ride conditions...I don't care!

I figure that if everyone else is leaving my flt level for smoother air, it just gets everyone else out of my way and increases my chances for direct.

I don't miss flying passengers around one little bit! The few times I've had to venture over to the pax terminal (the zoo) it's always a great reminder of how nice it is to just fly boxes around.

I had to commercial back to SDF last week from BWI. First time I've commercial'ed in uniform since 9/11. After getting the super duper top secret double security check from our friends at the TSA

and getting asked by everyone and their brother what gate their flight departs, I had just about had enough of the new and improved air transportation system!
banghead.gif
It brought back memories of my commuter flying days..only worse.

I feel for ya, Doug! Doing that everyday would drive me up the wall!

Nope.

Usually when you're standing in the doorway after a flight thanking the passengers for flying your airline, the kids either don't acknowledge your existence or roll their eyes at you.

Or my favorite from DAB this morning, a 17 year old girl says, "Hey, can you grab my bag in the coat closet?"

Nope!

Re: Continental Pilot\'s ad in USA today

Tonight I had the pleasure of sitting next to a person that wanted to tell me how he probably "flew more miles than I've flown." and how he shuttles between Phoenix and Tallahasee twice per month.

Oh joy.

Well at least he's a frequent flier who actually flies, as opposed to the people that use their credit card to pay for everything from sandwiches or gasoline and earn super duper platinum status although they've probably flown once in the past 24 months.

I always think of the line "if the pilots are scared to fly, do you really want to?"
