Connie with three engines feathered

If i remember correctly that was a design requirement that Kelly Johnson initiated. The Connie had to be able to fly with the #4 engine operating and the others feathered. That gave way to needing a lot of rudder surface. With a single rudder the aircraft would be to tall to fit into existing hangers so the surface area was divided into three which gave the Connie its distinctive tail.

They were inbound about at FL20 100 miles off San Fran and #1 prop threw a blade which hit #2 nacelle, which caused a fire in #2. Meanwhile the imbalance of #1 prop ripped the engine off the mount and took a good part of the outboard section of the wing with it.

He said they thought they were going to ditch, instead, when the airplane got into ground effect it stopped losing altitude. He flew it, in ground effect all the way in, under the Golden Gate to <st1:city><st1>Oakland</st1></st1:city> and landed. Then laundered their flight suits
