I applied for numerous positions last year in hopes of getting one. Presently it seems I am on numerous referrals with the statement I may or may not get called. IF I am notified I have been referred for a position and invited to a PEPC do I have a choice in what location I am going? Or is it in stone I will be going (if accepted) to the location I attended the PEPC? Also, I thought if you are on a referral list for one region you cannot be on a referral list for another region. Has this changed?:panic:

Let me clear some of this up.
  • Being referred to a location and being selected to interview for a location are different. You can be referred to infinite number of locations, but only selected to interview for one location at a time.
  • You will only be invited to attend a PEPC if you have been selected to interview for a position
  • One of the first steps at a PEPC is being offered your tentative offer letter (TOL) - this will be where you find out exactly what facility you're being considered for (this has nothing to do with the location of your PEPC). You either accept the TOL or reject it on the spot - if you accept, you proceed with the PEPC. If not, you get sent home.
  • You have a choice in what PEPC location you go to, but not what facility they offer you a job at.
  • If you accept the TOL and everything checks out from the PEPC (medical, psych, background, interview), you'll get your final offer letter (FOL) a few weeks later.
  • Let's say you are offered a TOL for Location A at the PEPC but you really wanted to work at Location B. Theoretically, you can accept your TOL for Location A, complete everything at the PEPC, then reject the FOL a few weeks later (you wouldn't have to repeat anything from the PEPC in the future, fastracking any future offers). This would remove you from consideration for Location A and put you back in the pool for Location B. However, this is risky as you might have to wait months for your next offer with no guarantee you get offered Location B (they might offer you Location C, D, etc...), or you might not get any more offers at all.
Hopefully that clears things up for you.

In my interview offer e-mail I wasn't invited to a PEPC. It was probably due to the fact I live 40 miles away from the facility. But if you're not offered a PEPC invite in you interview offer e-mail and you would like to attend one, give OKC a call and ask to attend one.

Thanks for the great info Sooner...it sounds like if we absolutely want to work for the FAA, pretty much accepting our first facility is the only guarantee.

Thanks Sooner. You have made this convoluted process a bit easier to understand. I see you are waiting as well. One more question.....I am on the referral list for positions I applied to in 2007. I also applied for the public announcement in February and provided my list of geographical locations. I am reading e-mails mentioning we will be sent an e-mail later this month for posting our geographical locations again. Can you clarify this?

Hey Sooner, thanks for clarifying everything but let me get this straight.
I been called for Kansas City Center position at 3 various location for PEPC, Ft. Worth, Chicago, and LA. I'm not too thrill about working at Kansas City, so is it better for me to go through the whole PEPC at one of the 3 locations and decline the offer (if everything goes well)? I do know its risky that I might have to wait a bit longer for any offer or maybe no offers at all. It's just so hard to decide if I should just go or decline right from the get go. Just wanna know what u think!

Well, if it were me - I would probably go just to get all of that administrative red tape out of the way. If you get another offer in the future, you won't have to go through it again. Something else to consider is that you might spend all the money to fly/drive out there, (plus hotel, food), then decline the offer and never get another one again - having wasted that money. You might be in a better financial situation than me though :)

Is the reason for declining ZKC because you wanted a tower, or because you don't think you'll like the area? If you want a tower that's one thing (call OKC to ask about getting a transfer to ICT instead - you have the possibility to switch between facility types as long as its within the same state). If it's because you don't think you'll like the area, I think you should accept the job and worry about moving somewhere else later. You just need to ask yourself how much you actually want to be a controller.

However, as Lavar Burton always said, "You don't have to take my word for it."
