I'm a little confused

the order that you get your ratings...is it

Pvt
Inst
Comm
Multi Comm
Multi inst
CFI
CFII
MEI

would this be the correct way to go about getting my ratings or is there a faster way to get them. maybe combine all the multi or maybe all the commercial?

Yeah it is confusing, especially since you can combine some checkrides, assuming you already have some of them done...

Like if you do you're private in a single, then a private multi add on, you'll end up having to do two instrument checkrides....

Anyway hopefully that didnt make the confusion worse; basically a lot of people do it like this:

Pvt
Inst
Comm single
CFI
CFII
Multi comm inst
MEI

and some go:

pvt
inst
comm single
comm inst multi
cfi
cfii
mei

the difference being when you get the multi rating

We clear? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/insane.gif course there are more variations but that's pretty much how it goes

I did Private SE, Private ME, Instrument, Commercial ME, Commercial SE, etc.

Very multi intensive, but as Ed said, I ended up having two instrument rides. This is great if you want multi time, but not great for your wallet...

Two instrument rides? Huh? Now I'm confused. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So far I've done
Private SE
Private ME
Instrument (in a ME)

Where's the second instrument ride?

Well, kinda sorta. The way ERAU worked is that I did my primary instrument training in a C172 (doing BAI, tracking, holds, arcs), and then took a checkride in the single. I then moved into the Seminole to finish off my training with approaches and XCs, and then took another checkride (my real instrument ride).

But hey, that was Part 141...not too sure how things can be done under Part 61.

You do not need to truly do a second ride, although... if you've been filing and flying instruments in a single, that has been illegal. You need to go up with a DE and prove that you can fly a single engine airplane on instruments... it's possible to incorporate that into your commercial ride if you want, but if you want to fly instruments now in a single... make an appointment with a DE. It won't be a true checkride, just an approach or two in a single, and that's all.

If you do your insrument in a single, then you need to do a single engine approach in a multi to get multi-instrument privleges. (task B+C of area VII)

If you do your instrument in a multi, you've satisfied all the PTS tasks for instrument airplane, and you dont need to do a single-instrument ride.

I was under that impression also, but I was told otherwise by both a DE and also a FSDO a couple of weeks ago. At the moment I'm trying to figure out where in the hell it says this... so I'll keep looking. It could be that I'm wrong... it wouldn't be the first time!

How would anyone know what class of airplane you took your instrument checkride in without looking at your 8710? My pilot certificate says:

Private Pilot
Airplane Single and Multiengine Land
Instrument Airplane

So I agree with Casey. No additional 'checkride' needed.

I've been proven wrong! Take your ride in a multi and it carries over to single engine privileges! Oh well... probably not the last time I'll be wrong /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
