You do not need to truly do a second ride, although... if you've been filing and flying instruments in a single, that has been illegal. You need to go up with a DE and prove that you can fly a single engine airplane on instruments... it's possible to incorporate that into your commercial ride if you want, but if you want to fly instruments now in a single... make an appointment with a DE. It won't be a true checkride, just an approach or two in a single, and that's all.

If you do your insrument in a single, then you need to do a single engine approach in a multi to get multi-instrument privleges. (task B+C of area VII)
If you do your instrument in a multi, you've satisfied all the PTS tasks for instrument airplane, and you dont need to do a single-instrument ride.

I was under that impression also, but I was told otherwise by both a DE and also a FSDO a couple of weeks ago. At the moment I'm trying to figure out where in the hell it says this... so I'll keep looking. It could be that I'm wrong... it wouldn't be the first time!
