Commuter Hotels in ATL

Two tricks I've learned so far.

On Priceline, if you bid "Four star for $40" you'll get either the Hilton Airport (very nice!) or the Rennassaince (haven't been). The Hilton's a great hotel, but a little snotty when you're on the Priceline deal (well, take your inventory off Priceline then!) Bar/Grill open late and reliable airport shuttles.

Plus, the Sleep Inn - ATL airport has a $37 airline commuter walk up rate and is the friendliest, most commuter friendly hotel I've dealt with. Free high speed internet, free choice of adult beverage in the early afternoons and close to Ruby Tuesdays (marginal food, perfectly acceptable salad bar). I'm still very curious as to why there's a security guard sitting in the corner after 7pm...

Do you think priceline.com is worth giving a try when booking hotels or airline tickets when on vacation or, in your case, commuting? I'm just wondering for future reference. I have never used it. You don't have to explain how it works, but can you get a pretty good deal sometimes?

Not sure about Priceline, but I've heard from my wife that Hotels.com and Travelocity are getting kinda shady. Hotels.com has been forgettting to fax in reservations. People show up to her hotel with a copy of the Hotels.com confirmation report, but the website never called to book the room. Last couple of weekends she's been running credit cards, all of Travelocity's cards were coming back "declined." Proabably just a computer glitch, but it's been happening for almost a month now.

You know, Priceline's a pain in the rump to use and unless you've got a lot of guidance from places like biddingfortravel or whatever the site is called, I really wouldn't use it for jack.

I got burned twice in other cities, but the 'four star/$40' was some gouge that I got from some other ATL commuters. The ATL airport deal is the only thing I'd dare use Priceline for again because they're notorious for doling out ratty hotels for a high price because they keep pimping you to increase your bid price, then WHAMMO! "Congrats! You have reservations at the Maricopa Indian Tribe Motel 5 1/2 for $85! Just a short 5-hour greyhound bus ride to downtown PHX!" and they can be even worse for airline tickets.

Alas, the flying public wants that initial cheap price but then they wait until reaching the airport to complain about their arrangements.

The only reason I booked thru Priceline last night was because I was getting back into ATL late, couldn't fly out until the next morning back home and they've got a pretty good sports grill that's open late downstairs. But I ended up blocking into ATL about 0215 so it didn't do me much good. I would have been a lot better off with the Sleep Inn.

Funny to see my own post from 2004 as the reply above, and thinking that, yes, it shows the current avatar not the one from back then, but I haven't changed it yet either.

Is this post by Seggy in the Guinness book of necroposting?
