Commercial certificate...what can you do with it?

Ok, so I've been out of the loop for a bit. I need to get back on track and take my commercial checkride. I have already passed the written a few months ago. Regardless, I am looking at what I can do with it when I get it. I know there is a spot in the FARs that tells me this, but I cannot seem to find it. Obviously to fly a 135 op VFR has to be 500hrs tt and IFR 1200hrs tt. I want to fill in the gap by air tours maybe? Trying to figure out what my limitations would be. I have no desire at this point to work for someone else, so I am not concerned with any hours but what the FAA requires and what the insurance company will require.

Ok, who has some insight into any of the above?

Advisory Circular 120-12A

Private Carriage Versus Common Carriage of Persons or Property

AC 120-12A

It is kind of "governmental" but it gives the legal definition of holding out and common carriage.

119 is the best list to go from.

As far as what I have done with mine so far, it is what I see as the most common stuff:

ferry aircraft

I could also do a photo flight, but the time of year for that isn't quite here yet; when it is, those are common (but I'll have CFI soon).

Which brings up, you can be a CFI

Also, a local jump school is in need of pilots, and I'd go over there, but am busy working on my CFI, spinning aircraft, having fun.

Think those things will be common for most areas.

The old paper ones folded up nicely to even out wobbly tables!

It's harder to do with the new plastic ones.

Seriously ... with low time (under 1,000 hours) the commercial ticket by itself just isn't really all that useful, practically speaking, for anything other than allowing you to go on to acquire your flight instructor certificate. You can thank insurance companies for that, btw.

Thanks for the help guys. I will be looking at what it will take to purchase a Maule with patroller doors, and do a sightseeing business. I have no intrest in becoming a CFI. I don't believe I should just to "build hours." That is not fair to me or the students. I do wish the system was not set up so backwards that it really funnels you into being a CFI even if you don't want to.

But that has been discussed before.

Once I build up the hours needed to charter, I fully intend on running a seaplane charter. That is my idea of fun. I may not make all that much moner, but it will be all my own.

Better look into the proposed new regulations that may make all sight seeing operations operate under part 135. Last time I looked it was likely to go into effect as of sometime this summer (unless the plan was struck down in the last month or so).

Tell chicks in bars that you're a commercial pilot then bolt for the restroom when they ask which airline you fly for?

Or when pressed, just say you are a jobless commercial pilot. If you just say you are a pilot, people always tend to ask more, so I'll say that before bolting
