Combine initial commercial & instrument in multi-engine?

Consider a student who currently holds a private pilot certificate with multi-engine rating, and is currently pursuing an instrument rating. Times are 230 TT, 151 XC, about 50 ME. Would it be advantageous or reasonable to combine the multi engine part of the instrument checkride with an initial commercial ride?
 
There's the risk of overwhelming the student. But you never know it could work out. The oral and flight would be longer, and I'm pretty sure you pay for both check rides, so you're not saving there. Some see the advantage in building more multi time, but you're paying for it. Might as well wait tell mei and log it while being paid.
 
You can't "combine" checkrides. If the student already has an Instrument rating, he could take the multi-engine checkride at whatever level he qualified for (PPL or Commercial) and include instrument priviliges on his multi-engine rating, but you can't do two initial ratings on the same checkride

Got the reg for that? Many places advertise getting a Commercial SEL & SES at the same time in an amphib, for example.
 
I'm pretty sure that whatever situation is put forward, it will require two 8710 forms. In the OP's case, probably do one first, land, issue the cert, and go right back up and do the other. That's how most people do the CSEL/CMEL "simultaneously".

No reg prohibits it. It's an issue of finding a DPE willing to do it. Last year I scoured the country looking for a DPE to combine checkrides without any luck. It depends on what you are seeking though. Combing an ATP with a type rating is common because the tasks and prerequisites are nearly identical. Combining most other rides becomes procedurally complex because even if the tasks match up the standards may be different (e.g., multi with inst privileges + ATP). Also, most examiners will not give up half their fee to do the same amount of paperwork and the hassle of dealing with the FAA when it gets kicked back.
