Colgan on Massive Hiring Spree

Hey Guys......

Quick question for the colgan folks out there. I'd like to submit a resume but I don't have a current flying job. I have about 1100TT/101ME and fly about 2 hours a month on my own dime to stay current. Just wondering what the chances of getting hired would be? Also, I am from Rhode Island and I know that PVD is a Saab base. What is the likelyhood of being based there?

Thanks,

-Joe

Hey look, I know SmittyB personally. He's a good guy. He's a really smart kid who doesn't study for crap. Sorry Smitty, I like you; but let's be realistic, you didn't study for crap when you were my student. I definitely need to question your dedication. Hopefully that's changed in the last year and a half since I left FL. But, I can also relate, when I was your age, I had no dedication to studying either and that's why I'm in the position I'm in right now and not moving on to the ER like others who are my age. ;) It will all work out for you Smitty.....just get focused and finish your ratings. PM me if you want to chat. I'm always willing to help out others....esp. former students.

Wow, that's pretty low coming from an instructor. I only took two flights and a ground lesson from you, so I don't see how you can comment on my study habits. Andy Casey and Micah can attest to my drive.

What about my dedication needed to come into question? Was it the fact that I had no car for so long, or do you really not believe me?

SmitteyB
Their are a million people in your life who will try and tell you what you can and can't do, they will try and convince you that your good enough or that you lack the dedication and focus needed to reach your goals.
All that matters is what you believe and whats in your heart, if you work towards that no one can stand in your way.
I find those people helped motive me personally, because I wanted to prove them wrong.
Best of Luck

Hey look, I'm not trying to put you down. I was in your shoes at one point and made the comment as such. Well, since you asked, when I took over for A. Casey, he spelled it out to me that you didn't study for crapola. You say we only had a few flights and ground lessons....well, that's true. But that isn't because you weren't scheduled to fly/ have ground w/ me.......you always cancelled.....NOT MY FAULT. You're obviously a smart kid, I just questioned your dedication a bit. After all, you are (were) in a "full time" program and still aren't finished w/ your ratings.....it's been almost 2 years, right? If you wanted to be at the airport, car or no car, there were plenty of people to get you there. You didn't live by yourself, right? There were many other students living w/ you and near you, right? So you might have to spend a couple extra hours at the airport if you got a ride from someone else.....big deal, good time to study. The NO CAR excuse is just that, an EXCUSE. Now, maybe you have other issues that I'm unaware of, and if that's the case, then so be it. I'm just calling it like I see it. If it hurts, then maybe it should.

Again I say, You are smart and have the ability to succeed, maybe it's just going to take a bit more focus on your part.

Cruise you should take it easy on SmitteyB,
People do change and it's really not fair to judge them on how they were.
We are all pilots and we should be supportive to one another.
Especially as a former instructor, it's one thing to be willing to give advice and another to be a supportive influence.
I know you mean well, but it may have come off a little mean and cruel.
Sincerely, Me

Ok, if I came off harsh, then I do apologize to SmittyB. However, there is nothing I said that isn't true. At least from my experience with him.

And, as I said before, I agree people change. I was in his shoes years ago and I've changed. I'm sure he will too. This all started from his statements earlier in the thread.

So SmittyB, again, I apologize to you if I hurt your feelings.

Matt, you didn't hurt my feelings. I just didn't think you worked with me enough to comment on my committment.

I am dedicated to my flying, however when I couldn't get a car or a ride, I can see how it could come off as that. But it wasn't lack of dedication. It was just very complicated. Plus we lived in Port St. Lucie, I wasn't going to ask someone to give me a 15 mile ride each way. When I did get a car and was ready to take the checkride, you were interviewing with CJC and I never heard from you again.

Did I have a problem studying? Sure, I did. I wanted to fly. It wasn't like that at all after the Private Multi.

Another thing is, I wasn't there to do it in 6 months. I wasn't at all interested in speed. Just because an instructor wanted flight time did not mean I was going to let him/her make me fly. Another reason, I'm not done yet, is the god forsaken school I attended, that in conjunction with college classes online.

All-in-all, I agree people change. I needed to mature when it came to studying and I have.

Back to the 1900. If you have to pay your dues, why don't people fly a 172 for 3 or 4 years? Because they'd rather fly something else?

Would I fly the 1900? Yes, I would! But I'm not down with the flight attendant thing. It's just my opinion.

I flew 172 for 3 years. As an instructor and aerial survey pilot....

....and I have to say that your attitude..well sucks.

Were in a service industry...service is what earns peoples business and that includes helping with drinks, helping clean the cabin, hell i know some people who have to empty the lav.(which is a ###### job....zing!)

You have an awful big ego for someone who is still training, i suggest you get over yourself and get on with the lessons.

Smitty, if you deadheading in the back of a flight, the crew has a tight turn, and you DO NOT help the FA(s) clean the cabin up, good luck if you see them again and need a ride or have to work with them!

I have a bad attitude because I don't like a particular airplane? I think I'm completely entitled to my opinion.

You would be entitled to comment on my ego if I were refusing to fly the airplane or say all flight attendants are trash.

You're comment was way out of line.

Seggy again, you're twisting my words. That has nothing to do with me disliking the 1900.

.

When regionals start putting lav duties in the job descriptions we will see who really wants these jobs.

Wonder if ATP and JetU can come up with a lav-dump simulator?

Oh hell, I was riding the FA jumpseat and I helped pick up trash in-flight.

Don't ever think you're above dashing for strollers, pushing wheelchairs, schlepping ice from ops, throwing bags downstairs or pre-cleaning the cabin during a short turn.

Airline flying is less actual flying than many realize.

If I wasn't in a rush when non-reving I would usually hang back and help cross seatbelts and things like that... That kind of stuff gets you recognized in company newspapers :)

Like I always say, if you LOVE flying, go to medical school and buy a Bonanza! If you love the ups and downs of the airline business, well, become an airline pilot.

Notice I didn't mention flying in the last half.

I'm all about Tug races in the tunnels of Denver International at 2AM... First one to the enterance of the secret underground UFO base wins!

Golf cart races over the A-bridge are fun too but you tend to wake up the TSA guy at the checkpoint.

I got my Multi time from Ari-Ben Aviator but I couldn't stay there for my instructor ratings. There is so much about that school that people can't say. The Ari-Ben community lives in fear and it's more than obvious on jetCareers.

Disclaimer: My training at Ari-Ben was absolutely top-notch.

While you may feel that your multi training was top notch and it may have been (I flew a 1965 Beech Travel Air at one of the scariest outfits in Texas and feel the same way), AriBen is known for telling its students that its kosher to load up a plane with an instructor and a student in the left seat and another in the backseat. All three log PIC which is total horsesh*t. The FAA knows this and airlines know this. I speak with a light heart. I know of several folks who went the AriBen route and disclosed their habits to me when we were flight instructors. Their practice is unethical that a freshly minted AMEL pilot can sit in the back and log PIC. You're not going to help out one bit if the guys up front pass out on you.

That's the untold story of AriBen and what can't be posted. If you can look yourself in the mirror and accept what you're doing, fine. It doesn't matter after you get hired as the multi time builds after that but you will always have a BS column in your mind's logbook that you know isn't legit. I know someone who was challenged on this in an interview and our chief pilot will zero in on it when you're most uncomfortable.

Not trying to be a jerk here. Just wanted you guys to know where the huge amount of multi time is coming from.
