CL-60 Challenger down in CO

MONTROSE, Colo. - A corporate jet taking off from near a ski area crashed through a fence and burst into flames Sunday, killing three of the six people on board and seriously injuring two others.

The pilot, flight attendant and one passenger died in the crash at Montrose Regional Airport, which serves the Telluride Ski Area, said Allen Kenitzer, regional Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.

Two other passengers suffered life-threatening injuries. The sixth person listed on the plane's manifest had not been found.

There was snow in the area but Kenitzer said he did not know if it was a factor.

The plane was on its way to South Bend, Ind. Kenitzer identified it as a CL-60 Challenger owned and operated by Global Aviation of Los Angeles, a charter service company.

Investigators from the FAA and National Safety Transportation Board were en route to the airport, 185 miles southwest of Denver.
 
Apparently Dick Ebersol (sp), chairman of NBC sports was in the Challenger in CO....And survived.

The captain I normally fly with went to interview there before he started where we both work now. As soon as he found out it was PFT, he ran, now I bet he is doubly glad he did. Prayers to the families of all those involved.

What is your source?? The original article has since been revised to show he survived, and his wife was not on the plane.

Yep, it is the answer to your question. I have "NO" idea. IS Lloyd correct? That freezing rain looks nasty. When I pulled the metars I put in the 18 hour time frame and rec'd way more than "18" Metars. The WX must have been changing like mad....

It's real bad in the 117. The "grid" that covers the engine inlets is known as the "ice cube tray", since freezing rain/drizzle tends to form inside the grids just like the tray in your freezer (if you have one), resulting in all sorts of bad karma, since when it comes off, the engine begins ingesting the stuff. Unlike the old A-10 engine, where you could drop bolts down the thing as it's running, and it grinds them up and spits the shards out the back end and keeps on running, the F404s we've got can't do the same.

Hey...that's the F/A-18 powerplant!! I've helped rip a couple of thsoe apart and overhaul them!!
 
So is the motto for the F-117A: "When it absolutely, positively has to be there without radar contact in non-icing conditions"?
 
Do you mean the 123 rule in terms of requiring an alternate?

Throw them the "141 - 22 & 1/2" part 121 rule!
