Ciriii...Cirrusi...Cirruses...?

Whatever you call them, do they build the damn things without a "strobe" button? Seems like every time I see one of these things, it's the middle of the night and they're taxiing around the ramp with their strobes on. Dude, they aircraft functions with the blinding xenon strobe lights in the O-F-F position.

There are very very few things in this world that really piss me off. people that turn on the strobes on the ramp to taxi is one those things.

There is no "red beacon" so the strobe lights are the "anti collision light system"

Yes, its total bullcrap, and other pilots shouldn't have to deal with the companys half-assness and I've told the company reps that I deal with my opinion on the system.

I think the only certification that is more BS than the Cirrus is the Eclipse.

Diamond does the same thing. Strobes only and no beacons.
Yeah. We typically leave them off until entering the runway. It says right there in the reg that the PIC can elect to turn them off when he judges it to be prudent to do so.

Same for newer Mooneys. Older ones had a beacon but newer ones don't. I usually just leave everything off until I hit the runway. If it's night I run nav lights only until I hit the pavement.

Had a cirrus pilot tell me i almost crashed the 'van because i landed on one wheel in a 24kt xwind. Then the "pilot" hopped in his "airplane" did the run-up right there on the ramp, all lights flashing, taxiid out, held short, did another run up, and then ate up more than half of a 3000 foot rwy.

Im not trying to make generalizations, or lump a group of aircraft owners together. But it seems from the cirrus pilots ive met, most of them fall into the more money than brains category.

Definitely not a Cirrus-specific thing-some Mooneys are the same way as well; I did some flying with a guy who got kind of bent when I asked him to use discretion and turn 'em off for taxi. He was based at a towered field, and I even tried the 'count the number of strobes you see off the active' game to no avail.
Pretty straightforward to start up and taxi with the navs on, and just turn strobes on when on or crossing a runway.....

bah! I think you guys are just jealous we can go over 200 knots at 16 GPH :laff: :nana2:

not just Cirrus, our Piper Warriors dont have a red beacon and only strobes. We do turn them off while taxing at night though.

Yes a airplane is a POS because of the way the lights are set up....right.

They are great airplanes, I'd buy one any day.

When I worked the line at a cirrus dealer I thought the same thing. They always blinded me with the strobes at night. Turning on the strobes is on the pre-taxi checklist, so I presume thats what everyone follows. Also all four of the light switches are next to each other so I guess they just flip them all over at once and don't think about who they blind.
