Chief Pilot - North Jersey Skydiving Operation

Skydive Sussex in Northern New Jersey is looking for a long-term pilot to fill the spot of chief pilot at their facility at KFWN. This operation has tremendous growth potential and will be tripling its size over the next three years. Right now they operate a C182/206 with plans for a Porter, Caravan, and eventually 2 Twin Otters. This is a great opportunity for a low time pilot to build lots of time and continually move up into larger and more complex aircraft while acting as a Chief Pilot.

Requirements are Commercial ASEL with high performance endorsement, approx 400 hours TT, some 182/206 time is a bonus, jump experience is a bonus, and tailwheel is a bonus.

Like I said, this operation is looking for a long-term (approx 2-3 years) pilot for this position. Please PM me with any questions or for contact information for the hiring manager.

Chief Pilot?
Hahaha now thats funny.

Unless you fly for Perris, Deland, Chicago, or Az, there aint no such thing as a chief pilot for a dz.

Ha

Yep. Chief pilot is a fancy way of saying only pilot.

Has the ownership changed? Five years ago, they flew a Porter there and they were chanting the 'tremendous growth potential' mantra like it was an anthem back then. Since they're back to using a C182/206 I guess that growth potential anthem thing hasn't worked out all that well for them.

Lawn mower experience a bonus, car washing/waxing experience a bonus, general contracting experience a bonus, plumbing/electrical experience a bonus.

Chief pilot refers to the fact that you will be responsible for knowing and flying all aircraft as well as scheduling maintenance and training. There are multiple aircraft and pilots on the weekends so chief pilot meaning "only pilot" is not entirely true.

I'm not sure if the ownership has changed but it is under new management within the last month and a very well respected skydiver/tandem master/FAA Rigger/Tandem Examiner is in charge of the operations. I'm not sure what happened during previous years, but this next year will be sure to show growth.

As for the odds and ends jobs mentioned, this is not like some of the other skydiving pilot jobs where the pilot is expected to do 30 hours of flying per week AND other non-pilot jobs around the dropzone. Try to understand that the manager is a professional and he makes sure the pilot is treated like one as well.

Sure how exactly? I'm sure they want it to grow. But in a year where wages are down and expected to stay down, and inflation is rising, how can you be sure that people are going to have more play money left over to go skydiving than they did last year when you could still buy a gallon of gas for under $3?

Well if that's the case, then it certainly is under new management. Because that was not the case when I worked there. And even if it's not the case, I'm not knocking it. A sleepy DZ with some beat up Cessnas is still a perfectly fine first job for somebody.

I just believe in calling a spade a spade. And the reality of this spade is (or was) that their closest major market is NYC which is over an hour drive away and there are (or at least were) several other DZ's which are also within an hours drive of NYC. And the competing DZ's fly bigger faster stuff which offers the jumpers a shorter plane ride to higher altitudes.

If the other DZ's have closed up shop, then they might indeed have a chance at seeing some growth. But if they've got any competition at all, they're going to have an uphill fight getting more folks to drive an hour to go jumping in a 182 instead of something bigger and faster unless they're giving away free beer and BJ's with every jump. And frankly, I'm not sure I'd want to be an employee of any company that gave their customers free BJ's. :D

I can vouch for what SoCalPilotGuy is saying as I work at the other dz owned by the same company and help out at sussex on weekends. We basically need a full-time guy whose willing to live there, housing could be a possibility. For the summer it would be nice to actually have two guys there.

So any guys with a fresh commercial in the area give me a shout. And if your skeptical about the dz getting bigger equipment or growing which it should, I can tell you at the very least you'll have to option of coming to the southern jersey location when it slows at sussex to fly the twin otters or skyvan that is there. Or if you really want to move around, we have a location in florida that you could go to for the winter when you get tired of Jersey. Its not a bad gig for a new guy

You know, I keep seeing people whining about being low time, not wanting to CFI, yet wanting a job flying something.

Well dang, here it is folks! A five day old thread and (apparently) no takers.

I know, right. you'd think a job that only wants a fresh commercial and will provide the oppotunity to build multi turbine time a pretty easy sell. Apparently not.

One of my new comm. pilots just landed a job flying 206's and dropping meat missles. The last I heard from him he did 17 hours in 3 days. Can't beat that for a new guy. And he is having a lot of fun.

I'm new here, and I have been flying a desk in a small room for a little too long now, so I admit my faculties are a bit dull...but I REALLY must be missing something; unless this pays like minimum wage or something, NE summers and Florida winters don't sound half bad to me. Throw in flying some COOL aircraft carrying people who love thrills....like I said, I must be missing something.

Ok, tried to resist, but have to ask...assuming "minimum qualifications" (whatever that really means in this case) could you give us a HINT what the pay range might be??? (Can't work for free for 2-3 years...)

Where are those moving boxes anyway......? :D

Wow this thread went from no one wanting the job a week ago to multiple people sending in resumes the same day, myself included.

My thanks to Socal and Arteyu for their help.

If only I had 180 more hours and my Comm. I don't know anything about the North Jersey location but the Cross Keys in South Jersey is a great place.

Got to sit in the co-pilots seat of the Otter when I went skydiving. It is one of the things that finally made me pursue aviation.
