Chicago Meigs Class D

Hello,

A while back (5 months or so), I posted asking for any special advice for flying VFR along the Chicago lakeshore. Low and behold, I never ended up making the trip. However, this Friday I plan on flying the shoreline up to MKE. In my planning so far, I have come accross another question. On the TAC, the Meigs class D airspace still appears to be charted even though, obviously, the airport is closed. Do the requirements as far as wx mins and communication for class D still apply to this airspace? I'm thinking not because the class D isn't charted on the sectional and there is nothing in the A/FD about it either. Just thought that since I've never seen that before I should ask just for some clarification. Thanks!

Well don't I feel like a shmuck! I just realized that I had been looking at my old chart and never thought about the expiration date. I just picked up a new one and the class D is not charted on this one! I guess the new moral of this thread is to check the dates on your charts!

Yeah, way to go Mayor Daley! You destroyed Meigs because you thought you'd be safer without it, but now the Class D airspace that was once protecting your city has been downgraded to a much less restrictive Class E!

What a genius.

Now anyone can fly up to the city without having to talk to someone...unless, of course, someone enacted an TFR...

Ha... Someoone should send Daley that information... that'd be funny!

But no wait, don't mention the TFR thing, he might just try it, the crazy loser he is.

You know a bunch of pilots should get together and fly throughout the former class D airspace towing protest banners. I think that would get some attention.

It's speculated the real reason he wanted Meigs gone was because his wife didn't like it. He knew the vast majority of people wanted Meigs to stay open, so he decided to secretly bulldoze the airport at night, stranding a bunch of planes. The whole ordeal was like something in a dictatorship.

Meigs deserved to go. Parks are far more important than airports. And Daley isn't a dictator, he's the best mayor any city has ever seen.

Double-kidding!

Daley's reign is most likely coming to a close with the next election. I will be very sad to see him go...

Does anyone think there is a prayer of Meigs re-opening with a new mayor in town? I think it would be such a great place to fly in and out of.

Remember, Daley is a politician and the average voter is a doofus.

He'll put together some campaign about how he's keeping Chicago safe, trying to fight taxes, increase social security payments and that he's for/against some hot button issue.

Even if he does put together some type of campaign to try and get re-elected I think his reign of terror is over with. There is so much corruption in his administration and it’s been hitting the new here weekly. It like a broken record hearing him say “I have absolutely no knowledge of any corruption in my administration”. People probably believed him the 1st time…but the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th time…..I’ll be there to open the door of city hall when he leaves!

MikeD man, what have you been drinking over there?, and can you bring some to Vegas?

Trust me I hope I'm correct too!!! Daley is such an a$$!!! You should see some of his press conferences. He has zero public speaking skills. Time for some fresh air in Chicago.

Don't say that too loud. Or Chicago will end up with an ADIZ, and when a single engine Cessna that could break a few windows at the Sears Tower breaches it, they'll implement the super well thought out, cutting edge, high tech, highly efficient strategy that they use in DC.

"RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! IT'S A CESSNA! AAAAAAAAAAAH!

MikeD:

Chicago could have added to the airport and made a nice park for all to enjoy. Build a pier and add boat slips and over-water eateries then watch the tax money roll in.

You know he was joking, right?

Actually, I believe a lot of what's going on with Meigs had to do with political pressures from environmental groups. Chicago is HUGE on this environmental cleanup in the city. There was a good article about it in Outside Magazine. I think Daley's team has planted about 400,000 trees in the city and counting. Even the roof of city hall is now a garden of sorts.

For those who are upset about Daley's corruption, you must realize that every administration in the history of Chicago has had such connections. It's just that the Daley tradition carries more clout and weight in this city.

If you would have seen Chicago 15 years ago, compared to today, you would realize how much progress this city has made in that time under Daley. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm just as pissed off about the Meigs fiasco as anyone. But, I still recognize that Daley has done a lot for this city. I'd rather take him as a politician than Hillary Clinton or G.W. Bush. He's got guts, drive, and doesn't care what anyone thinks.
