Changing it up, the three year plan.

FLIPY FLAPS!
Not that it may matter to any of you folk, this outline is kinda for me too.

Soooooooo, here goes, a lot of you out there know that I'm a younger guy, who, for the most part, has been looking for some sort of direction in my flying career. Well, I think I've figured it out.

I'm 20, so I've got 3 years to kill for I can fly in the jobs I really want to fly. However, I think its time to mellow out a bit. Now, I don't have a college degree so I've been going back to school since the beginning of this semester and have gotten a semester of UVSC finished off. With that said....

End of 2008:
Finish this semester of UAA
Finish CFI through an old friend.
Keep working flying the sled at 100hr/mo

2009:
Finish my UVU Degree online (I'll be done with that if I do summer courses by the end of 09)
Keep working on my UAA degree (I've decided to change my major to Econ)
Fly at my current job (I doubt I'll get fired/furloughed/or the business will go under), that'll add another 1000hrs.

2010:
Start Masters in Aeronautical Science at Embry Riddle World Wide
Finish UAA Degree (SHould be a BBA in ECON if i've plotted this all out right)
Keep flying at Spernaks, I'll break 3500TT or so this year.

2011:
Finish Masters
Turn 23

I kinda figure at that point, I'll have over 4000TT, 2 degrees, a masters, and turbine time from my old work. At that point, I should be able to go anywhere, even out of aviation if I so choose.

Like I said, this is more me putting words to paper, I've kind of decided to mellow out a little on my drive to get turbine time, or the like, I can make myself more marketable, and have waaaaaaaaayyyyy more fun by flying little stuff and going to college than working someplace flying turbine twins or whatever for piss poor pay. Thanks for listening.

Sounds like a decent plan.

All I can say is, good luck staying motivated with school. I'm in the last semester of my second undergrad degree.

I work full time and it's all I can do to show up to class. Thank goodness they're super easy classes with hardly any homework. If I actually had to study I'd fail for sure. I don't think I could take another semester of this stuff (this is my fifth year of college).

College was fun and I'm definitely glad I did it, but man, my life will get a lot simpler come December.

I'm 23 and I don't have nearly the amount of flying you do. Then again, I have my BA because I put flying off to go to college.

I was supposed to start school at PanAm back in August. Never happened. Looks like my 3 year plans changed, too.

I'll probably head back to VA, get a job and train at the flight school I went to for my private.

Sounds good. A few questions:

1) Why so many degrees? What do you hope to do with a Masters in Aviation Science?
2) Spernaks sounds like a sick gig, but if it was me and I could make enough doing it, I'd instruct on some floats out there. Then you can give me your job at Spernaks ;)
3) None of your multi time will be current by 2011 either, so if you want to leave Alaska you might consider finding a twin to instruct in to be more marketable in the states (dare I say find some turbine time too?). Maybe Ace would take you back on between semesters?
4) I didn't see anywhere in your plan "hitting on Sarah Palin should McCain not win?"

1. Nothing, its just something fun to do. I enjoy the aviation classes, however, I don't want to be a "one trick pony" and be shoe horned into aviation stuff forever, and while I'm making the coin to keep going to school, why not?

2. I'm thinking about doin' some part time work after I finish off my initial cfi at a local school, then I can do some float flying on their citabria,

3. True, but supposedly where getting a twin (C402 is what the rumor is)

4. Definately a MILF. I should have included that in my plan.

Sounds like a good plan, and very similar to what I'm planning on doing... but I'm just getting one degree.

To those experienced in the field - how practical is getting a CFI job during college?

I was going to make the same comment about the number of degrees you want, but, hey, if it's your hobby then go for it! If it's not your hobby, they maybe you should consider investing in a different type of education.

I looked into the Aeronautical Masters from ER, but decided against it. It's perfect for folks looking to check the "do you have a master's degree" box, but other than that I thought I'd have a tough time getting any reward for the investment, as it's pretty broad and doesn't have as much focus as other masters programs I reviewed. A masters degree should make you a specialist in a particular area. Undergrad degrees are a good tool to broaden your horizon, but a masters should focus you.

Just my 2 yen.

I doubt it will be too difficult, I did my commercial in my first year of college while working a little more than half time. I'll tell you when I finish mine off.

I did it for my last three quarters of college, taking full unit loads each quarter, and juggling 5 students - up until I graduated this past Spring. Main thing is time management and getting your priorities straight. When it came time for midterms and finals it sucked, but it's definitiely doable. Still got to do all the fun college partying and waking up wondering WTF happenned. It was great. I miss it. Wish i didn't graduate into this crap job market.

Ppragman....sounds like a great plan. I've been contemplating going for my masters as well since no one is hiring these days. What kind of gig are you flying up there in Alaska? 1900? I'd love to do flying up there, but my GF would probably drop kick me in the stomach if I told her I was going up to AK to fly. Good luck!

I was flying 1900s, now I fly 207s, maybe I should update my avatar.

Doable and highly recommended. If you're like most of us you'll be working concurrently with school anyway, so why not build your flight time? If possible, try to freelance. My QOL increased 10X when I left my first flight school and was able to manage my own students/schedule. I got paid about 4X what I had been making as well...

Prag - Hop on the "the market will rebound eventually" wagon with me and invest all of that money you planned to use on degrees. I think I'll start a thread about it...

Great, thanks guys. My CFI told me that'd be a good route to go and wanted to confirm it with the JC crew.

Only problem is, there aren't many scholarships that help out with flight training.
