CFIs: health insurance?

I won't have any insurance by Sept. and many folks have said: your crazy, don't risk it! But I figure work has paid my insurance premium for 4 years, and as a result, I've had one $12,000 physical--I can chance it for a year or two while training/instructing.

I'm guessing most of you work for companies that do not provide it. Do you pay out of pocket for it, or just risk it and hope to stay healthy?

I have VA health coverage because of my disability (which is worse than no ceverage...

) - That covers emergency health care and most other small things.

For about 2-1/2 years after I got out of the Military, I had none. Didn't need to go to the doctor, either.

Some people say it's crazy....just depends on whether or not you're willing to live with that risk.

Also depends on your situation. I'd be nuts to go without health insurance. In fact without co-pay on my medication I'd be in some pretty sorry shape as they keep my asthma controlled pretty well. Without them though, my health goes downhill.

i pay for my own health insurance. Check out American Family Insurance. I only pay $86 a month for a 500 dollar deductible full policy deal.

While you're at it, check out Golden Rule too. My wife used this insurance a few years ago and it seemed pretty reasonable.

If you can swing, I'd highly recommend getting insurance. Good luck!

Health insurance is one of those things that you buy, that you really hope you never have to use (same thing with all insurance... unless you're one of those people that burns down their own house)... but if you do need it, you'll be glad you have it. I pay something like $74.00 a month for a $500 deductible through blue cross blue shield. The insurance covers office visits ($15 copay) and all the lab work... so the 500 is for when you really screw yourself up. I'd highly recommend some type health insurance... you can get some insurance with a very high deductible for emergencies (say you get into a car accident) that's quite cheap.

yeah...my roommate doesn't have health insurance and she gimpped up her ankle last year and got stuck with a HUGE HUGE bill from the doc for an x-ray. She didn't even go to the ER she sucked it up until monday when she could go to our university health system but they x-rayed her and charged her up the butt for it.

I'd keep some kind of coverage for "just incase" don't wnat to break something and be out a few hundred grand. (though me being the good liberal that I am would contribute to your "pay my bill" fund)

I have a normal full-time job that I get my medical insurance through, and I instruct part-time. I never really used my medical and last november I ended up having an emergency surgery, and ended up staying in the hospital for about a 1-1/2 weeks. After I got the billing summary from my insurance company I'm sure glad that I had medical insurance.

I really would not go without at least major medical. If you never go in for an exam and never have any rx's, then just skip all the offic co-pay and rx co-pay coverages, and then your premium will be like $50 a month probably. I have a friend who had no insurance and found out he had cancer in his leg. Nothing you can do at that point, and it makes you pretty uninsurable for a long time. I wouldn't go w/o it, even if you have to cut back something like tv channels and cell phone minutes, it's worth it.

Well, I went 18 years without health insurance. Not smart? Maybe. I never get sick (which SUCKED when I was in HS), and I don't need any meds to maintain myself. My wife on the other hand takes two different meds a day, so we're hoping she can get on with someone that has a health plan when we move. I have never really NEEDED health insurance (thank the stars), but it's a comfort knowing I've had it. I could go with COBRA after I leaves SWA, but it's just cheaper to pay out the ass to a doctor. Most insurance premiums (for me) cost more than I would spend on doctor visits in a year.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

Our flight school provides health insurance for us CFI's. I was shocked when I found that out but it sweet to have.
