CFII Knowledge Test Question

Okay, I'm a little confused: I'm taking my CFII written this weekend, and I've been studying the Gleim books for the Instrument Pilot rating (airplane). I already have my CFI initial. I've started taking the practice exam on the webexams.com website. I'm seeing all kinds of CFI initial questions, and even some suspiciously ATP sounding questions, mixed in with the instrument questions. Here's my question: Does the CFII test cover all of the initial stuff, lazy 8's, center of gravity, airplane design, as well as the instrument rating specific stuff? Or, does the CFII test only cover stuff relative to the instrument rating?

A little help here...

It only covers what is in the book. It does not cover anything such as maneuvers, FOI, etc. However, I do recall getting a helicopter question on my CFII written. I believe it was a fuel requirement question..

Anyhow, I hope this helped. Good luck!

Yeah, that's right, it is the same question bank that the instrument airplane uses. This is also the same question banked used to get your Instrument Ground Instructor rating. You may ask "why would i need that?" Well if you would ever like to get a Gold Seal rating on your CFI rating you need to have either a ground or instrument instructor rating plus ten sign offs with an 80% pass rate. It is a good resume builder.

Why was here a helicopter question in there?

I'm a little unsure how this works for the IGI. Do I have to take the IGI test in addition to the CFII knowledge test? If it's the same test, why take it twice?

In a related subject, I don't quite understand how to become a certified groud instructor. Is that similar, in that I take the knowledge portion twice and then it's added to my CFI cert?

I'm trying to absorb as much of the Gleim book as possible for the CFII stuff.

If you are not a CFI, the FARs require you to have a ground instructor certificate to teach ground school only at FAR Part 141 schools or to sign off applicants for the appropriate pilot knowledge test.

I take this to mean that if you have your CFI/CFII there is no need for you to possess a ground instructor certificate.

I'm not a ground instructor, but I can give you an idea of what I know about getting one. You simply have to take a written exam. If you pass, you take the results down to the FSDO and they issue you a temporary certificate. It is a completely different certificate than the CFI, so no, it's not added to it.

If you're a CFI/CFII already, I don't see a reason to even have a ground instructor certificate (besides for resume-building purposes). You can teach the same things as a flight instructor, and then some.

Well, if you want to be a Gold Seal CFI, you do. Otherwise, from an operational perspective - no.

The only reason I can think of is that as a cfi you need to keep a record of who you endorse and their results. A ground instructor doesnt. So if you're a cfii and an IGI it might eliminate the 'pleeeeease call me about your test!' when you sign the entire class off to take the written.

I'm taking the cfii written tomorrow and from my understanding it's only from the instrument test bank of questions. As for the helicopter question, I actually got a question yesterday on my IGI test about minimum fuel requirements for helis. Sorta threw me off.

Well, CFI, but not CFII, yet. I'm going down to Fulton County field to do the ATP 15 hour CFII/MEI thing on the second week of October. Did my Commercial ME with the ATP folks outside of BHM, it was a Sierra Hotel program. I liked it a lot.

No, I have no operational need to be a ground instructor, but I want the resume fodder. If it's as simple as sitting through another test, so be it. I think I'll have enough students, in time, to qualify for the Gold Seal thing, I want to be eligible.

Not to sound arrogant, but should I be worried that I'm only making in the mid 80% range on my practice tests? Will anyone ever seriously ask me during an interview what my score was on my written tests?

Back to studying...

About your "grade" ... I couldn't even tell you what I scored on my tests at this point. I know the lowest I ever got was an 88 and the rest were in the 90s but beyond that your guess is as good as mine. So .... as long as you're consistently above 70 I wouldn't worry about it.

the only written test that might matter what score you got on it would be the ATP (I've heard of people being asked that in an interview). Every other test, just get the 70 or better and you'll be fine.
