I've got a simple question and looking for confirmation.

i am looking to get a CFII add-on to my CFI for aircraft, single engine land. So I already have a CFII for helicopters, and as mentioned the CFI for SE land aircraft. I am trying to determine what written test I need to take-- my research yields that i need to take the Flight Instructor Instrument Airplane--- I think the test code is FII…

any help on this one

Thanks

§61.191 Additional flight instructor ratings.
(a) A person who applies for an additional flight instructor rating on a flight instructor certificate must meet the eligibility requirements listed in §61.183 of this part that apply to the flight instructor rating sought.

(b) A person who applies for an additional rating on a flight instructor certificate is not required to pass the knowledge test on the areas listed in §61.185(a)(1) of this part.

Slightly off topic, but when I did the CFI writtens, I took the airplane initial and the instrument initial writtens. In the matrix there is provision for an addon written, but I would have to have the initial license/endorsement to take it. Why take aif/aih when you can take fih/FII?

I'd check iacra/the FSDO, with both instrument writtens available, I'd imagine you have to take both.

Mike..thanks… so by my read the short answer is no?

Negative. The answer is yes you have to take a shortened "add-on" version of the written. The above answer is very misleading because 61.185(a)(1) is only the FOI.

The CFII written was pretty much a repeat of the basic Instrument rating written. I took the FOI written one day, the CFIA written the next day, and the CFII written a week later. Had to turn in the original hard copies with the embossments to the checkride examiner. That was three years ago, but I don't believe it has changed.

@TD, here is the short answer: You have to take the AIF. There are only 20 questions. See FAA Order 8080.6, Chapter 5, Figure 5-8.

I'm sorry - I glossed over the instrument instructor part. You do need to take a test. It is the AIF - Flight Instructor Instrument Airplane (Added Rating) . Only 20 questions. Sorry for the confusion.

well crap....I am just getting ready to do the CFI-A add on and everyone has told me I don't need to take a written. Even the DPE!

Also a little known detail is that unlike your initial CFI-whatever written you do need logbook endorsement to take the addon written in different category.

Like I say hh, I took both initial writtens instead of one initial, one addon w/endorsement, which was acceptable.

So….. after talking with the BHM FSDO…they say "naw… you donthave to take the AIF written… you already have a CFII for helos--- yet ATL FSDO says… you need to take the written 20 question test….anyone else ever get conflicting info from FSDOs…

advice?

thanks…. confirmed with MCO FSDO and yes ,… AIF it is…. i understand its only 20 questions…. while i am a CFII helicopter, would it be best to just study the CFII initial prep material? Sheppard Air does not offer the AIF test prep…..,

i have a CFI-A and i am looking into taking the written test to get my CFII add on to my rating. do i too need to take the AFI?
