So its that time for me to renew my instructor cert and have not had to go into the fsdo before and do so. Have been out of flight instructing since last may so I did the american flyers renewal program and have the certificate. I made an appointment at the fsdo and I asked the person I talked to what exactly I should bring and if it would be better for me to make an iacra account or print an 8710. I was scolded by the person I talked to and he said, "You realize who you are talking to? Im a little worried about going in there with the fear of getting a full on checlride or any questions asked. Can anyone tell me what to expect? This is the houston fsdo

No checkride... All you need is the notarized certificate from AMF, your CFI certificate, driver's license, and I printed out an 8710 and filled it out by hand. You'll go in, they'll make sure you're you, they take your plastic certificate, you get a temp, you sign the temp and go home.

Unless they specifically transferred you to a GA inspectors desk, you were talking to a receptionist that probably has no idea what 8710 or IACRA means.

I ended up doing both the IACRA and a paper copy just in case. Took a few extra minutes, but it was worth the time to make sure I didn't upset the FAA.

They are here to help! What a joke. If I were you, I would report the guy. Some of them are total pricks for no reason. If they get enough complaints, they stick them somewhere that involves little interaction with outsiders (promotion!). The way our FSDO works is they have a different inspector on duty each day. I would call back and see if you get a more reasonable inspector.

Were you talking to an inspector or the front desk? If the desk then maybe the person really had no clue and that's what they were trying to convey, but it came across the wrong way? If it was an inspector I'd call and ask for a supervisor and talk to them about this person. Remember the FAA are public servants, they are there to help, not act like pricks... so if they forget their job then it's ours to remind them and hold them accountable.

I was transferred to an inspector and this was not a receptionist. He just had a real attitude about some questions I was asking him so after I finish the renewal, I will ask for a supervisor. Thanks for all the replies! Is there anything to print off from IACRA?

You'd think he'd appreciate the question so that things were done the right way the first time...

I filled out my 8710 via IACRA and brought along a printed out version as well just in case. I also had my certificate from American Flyers and my DL. I was lectured about putting off my renewal to the last month. I was also asked some questions about CFI privileges, restrictions, and a few regs. It wasn't a pass fail deal, but the inspector said he always asks a few questions. Not a big deal at all.

Try your congressman instead.
