CFI renewal effect on IPC

I am sure I know the answer on this but I thought I would throw it out there.

I've got a Helicopter CFI-I. Its been a little over a year since I did an approach in a helicopter therefore I am not current for IFR in helicopters and since its been over a year I need a IPC. No big deal I do regular fixed wing approaches in the course of my normal job. Does that make me a Bi-aerodynamic aviator? :bounce:

However I had another CFI-I tell me since I just renewed my flight instructor certificates it reset the clock for me and I don't need a IPC.

This doesn't make any sense to me but the fellow CFI-I swears up and down its correct. I think he is an idiot (he flies helicopters after all).
 
A flight review and an IPC are two different things. Each could be accomplished on the same flight, however you would have to reference what is involved for a Flight review and what is involved for an IPC. Also renewing you CFI doesn't count as a flight review.
 
Tell the swearing CFII to check his sources. Or at least to point out where the FAA, as opposed to he, says so. That should keep him busy.

Renewing your CFI with a FIRC or, for that matter in any way other than a practical test renews your CFI certificate and ratings butnothing else. Zip. Nada. Not flight reviews and certainly not instrument currency.

A CFI practical test counts as a flight review, but not an IPC. I will make an educated guess that even CFII practical doesn't automatically count as an IPC, although that's a little less clear.

Yeah, he can't. He's an idiot. I asked him to cite a source and he told me to check the FARs. I didn't bother but figured I would throw it out to the peanut gallery here. He's maybe been a CFI for 6 months or so. I thought he might know something I didn't. Been awhile since I took that test and maybe something changed.

Play dumb. Tell him, "gee, I really tried. I just can't find it. Please show me the FAR that applies." Make it sound like you recognize how much more he knows and just want to learn.

I'm guessing of course but I'd bet he heard about how the FAA changed the old rule that a Cfi ride didn't count as a BFR a few years ago and misunderstood it.
