CFI Knowledge Test -- Updated?

Cloud Surfer

All Roads lead to Trantor
Greetings, all.

I am about to take the Flight/Ground Instructor Knowledge test, but I am somewhat hesitant after a friend had informed me that the FAA had changed the questions for every knowledge test since 2011. Thus far my strategy in preparation for taking it was to read each study-unit in the Gleim product for 2009, and when I hadn't known how to answer a certain question, to read up about the topic in the original source from which it came. I have heard that the FOI written has been heavily updated since 2011, but like a fool, I failed to inquire which exams had been updated.

Since I used the 2009 edition and the FAA has updated the exam, can I await a drastically different set of questions from those which I studied? As of now, I'm not sure whether I should hold off on taking the written, and whether I ought to buy further study material for 2012. If anyone has insight on this matter, I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks in advance for replying.

Agree with the nod to Dauntless...

I'm boycotting Dauntless after they screwed me over on their logbook software. However, Sheppard air is fantastic. IF you do Sheppard air, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and READ THE EXPLANATIONS. You may just learn something, as well as ace your test!

Exactly what I would have said! Sheppard Air for the win!

How did they screw you over? Never had an interest in the logbook, use LogTen Pro, myself. But can't see how being screwed over makes their study ware worse than Sheppard...

I've used both Sheppard and Dauntless for studying. Sheppard for my FEX check, and Dauntless for A&P and PPL so far. Dauntless is just a better system.

To each their own, I suppose.

How did they screw you over?

When I first bought SafeLog, dauntless software's website was very specific -- Once you purchased it, you owned it. They even made a contrast to software that offered an ongoing license*.

A few years back, safelog automatically downloaded an update that said "Pay us money or you can't use the software anymore". Naturally, I flipped my biscuit... they replied "Oh, our software was never intended to be free for life. You get a great deal, because we provide you updates for a small fee."

NFW -- That's pure extortion. Not what I agreed to, certainly not what I paid for. They were holding my data hostage, and I was pissed. I went to LogTen Pro.

Now here's something I just found out -- When I've criticized them in the past on various fora, I have always just posted a link to the internet wayback machine (http://archive.org/) to prove my point. When I just now went to find that link again, I found that Dauntless Soft has put up a robots.txt specifically to remove their old content from the internet wayback machine!!!

That file is tailored specifically for the internet archive that I've been using to use their own words against them. Guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty. They are creeps, scum of the earth, and THAT is why I won't do business with them. THAT is why I boycott them. THAT is why I urge people not to buy anything from them, regardless of practicality. Crooks are crooks, even if they're selling something cheaper than the rest.

If you don't mind dealing with an immoral company, please be my guest.

Dauntless is just a better system.

Citation needed.

Anyway, to each their own indeed ... now you know why I boycott them, though, and why I suggest others do the same.

For clarity, let me make it perfectly clear: The license I clicked through said nothing about ongoing licensing, and the website that sold the software clearly said (And if the internet archive was still available, you could see for yourself) that the software was yours when you bought it. They used it as a selling point even.

I'm still fuming that they would hide their archived content to prevent people from using their own damned website against them. I mean, I suppose I just don't get it because I'd never screw someone over like that in the first place, so I can't put myself in that mindset... but I've been seething since finding that robots.txt a few minutes ago.

Dishonest business.

Guess I can understand the problem that you've had then, Acrofox.

Never seen anything on their website other than the 3 yr license option for SafeLog. I'd be pissed as well, if I had bought a "lifelong" license.

Interesting, they have actually given me Safelog for the past couple years, they just gave it to me again a few days ago. I've had nothing but excellent service and responses from them.

I suppose the part that's the most frustrating to me is that I used to be able to cite their own website on the internet wayback machine (http://www.archive.org/) to prove my point ... and now they have explicitly disabled the internet wayback machine archive of their site.
http://www.dauntless-soft.com/robots.txt says:
User-agent: ia_archiver
Disallow: /

... which is specifically written to disable archive.org.
Alright, I'll stop repeating myself. I was a little harsh last night, but man does this set me off six ways to sunday. I go out of my way to support small businesses in aviation because I think it's worthwhile ... so it stings all the worse.
Eh, I'll shaddup. :> Sorry for the derail.
