CFI Job Interview

Folks:

I have a CFI job interview tommorow and I was just wondering what kind of attire I should wear? I'm thinking about wearing a suit, but would that be overkill?

Thanks!

A suit would be good. Remember first impressions are lasting ones. Look professional and that will tell me them you are serious about you job

A suit would be a great idea. Not only is it professional, it will make you look older and have a more powerful "command presence."

Can't go wrong with a suit - better to be overdressed than under. In a lot of situations, business casual will be acceptable UNTIL someone walks in with a suit...makes everyone else look bad (tough for them).

Just remember to tell Pat you've got your first student already

When it comes to interviews, the rule of thumb is to dress one level above what you will be expected to wear in the position you are applying for. The best thing to do, if possible, is to check out the school, and the person that will be interviewing you, to see what they normally wear. I've been at schools where everyone, including the chief pilot/owner, wore shorts and tee shirts. You might feel, and look, out of place wearing a suit at that school . However, if the owner wears slacks and a dress shirt, then the suit is a great idea. Over dressing is better than under dressing, but it can hurt you if you go too far.

Good luck with the interview!

If you are offered the job, decline it, because somebody here told me it was bad to do anything that takes a job from anybody else.

Hahaha. Good one.

Shorts, a t-shirt, and something over your feet. As long as the stuff isn't too faded out, or torn, that pretty much will work out in my area here. Pretty much what I wear ever day, work or not. If it is night, I may put on some long pants.
I never understood dressing in a way that will make you uncomfortable.

I'm back from the interview. I thought it went well... about 30-45 minutes. They scheduled me for an hour, so I don't know if that was bad that we wrapped up early or not.

I wore the suit, so I hope that didn't hurt my chances. The owner/chief pilot and assistant pilot wore the steriotypical garb: polo shirt and pants or shorts.

I was really nervous and hope that didn't show much. There wasn't any knowledge questions, which I was surprsied at because I had come with my 4" CFI binder and studied the days before any question that could come my way.

I should hear Monday whether or not I got the job. Thanks for your help everyone, expecially Alex!

Good job - sounds like it went well!! What type of questions did you get? Did you have a good feeling about it when you left??

The usual questions like:

Tell us about what got you interested in flying?
Tell us why you picked Purdue.
Tell us about your strengths/weaknessnes.

I left with mixed feelings to be honest. This was my first interview... ever so I don't know how it should have felt.

Running back over things in my mind there were things I could have expanded upon and there were more things I wanted to say but I didn't know how much was too much in a response to a question.

So, we'll see on Monday how effective I was.
