CFI- Initial

CFI Initial, North East Ohio:

I want to provide other CFI students with an idea of what to expect on the oral and flight of a CFI checkride. This isn’t meant to be a cheat sheet, but rather just an example of one checkride with a certain examiner on a particular day. There were many other questions, but these are the ones I can remember. I nailed the FOI by using flashcards to memorize all of the obvious lists of key words (used PTS and flight instructor handbook) and that made the rest of the oral go much more smoothly. In the end he thanked me for preparing so thoroughly and I think that made the flight portion go easier even though my landings totally sucked. I remained calm even though I was expecting the… “I think we need to meet again so you can show me how not to come in high on a short field approach.”

ORAL:
8:30 AM
Paper work and discussed our plan of action.
Look at logbooks (mine and the airplane).
What makes an airplane airworthy?

FOI:
What is learning?
What is the one thing that affects learning more than anything else (one word)? I answered goals/values and we eventually got around to me saying ‘motivation’ and that was what he was looking for.
Principles of, characteristics of, and levels of learning.
What is a critique used for? (emphasis on the positive) What makes an effective critique?

Aerodynamics:
What happens aerodynamically in a turn?
When you roll into a turn do the ailerons remain deflected?
Airplane axis/control surfaces.
Stability: How does aft and forward CG affect flight?
Why do we need to know landing weight? (was looking for LAHSO)
Teach Eights on Pylons.

Regulations:
What does a student need to solo? At night?
Teach private pilots to use their certificates… what are some things they can and can’t do? He was looking for a definition/explanation of the regs concerning commercial ops. What exactly is incidental to business?

Airspace/Charts: many simple questions.
One notable question: How do you know if a class D airport has radar services?

Systems:
Describe the landing gear.
Does the power pack that controls hydraulic pressure run off the bat or is it engine driven?

Weather:
AIRMET, Convective SIGMET
When are TAF issued and what are are they? same with METARS?
What cloud condition is considered a ceiling?
Where are clouds/winds given in AGL vs MSL?
Is the weather good enough for us to fly?

FLIGHT:
Steep turns, engine out circle to land, soft field TO, soft field landing, eights on pylons, chandelle, short field landing… DONE. Passed. Drink.

Oh yeah, P-factor: 8.5

Sweet! So, when ya coming down for the rest of it? :)

BTW, he didn't make you do lazy eights/wing overs?

I have to hang around for my friend's wedding on February 4th, then I will be coming down for my CFII and hopefully MEI depending on my money situation. Can't wait to hang out with you guys.. I heard you are in a band down there!

He didn't make me do lazy eights which dissapointed me as I was looking forward to showing him my wing overs! Actually, I learned to do them much more lazy and mild for the test, but I think they should change the pts to "not exceed 60 degrees". That would be much more interesting.

Heh, you'll be in time for the first gig, too. Should be in late Feb/early Mar.

Yeah, I've sorta perfected my technique now, too. Then they go and get a totally different Arrow, and I have to re-learn them. The 69 Arrow does them WAY differently than the other Arrow we have. It also falls out of the sky a lot faster on power off 180s.

Examiner to propilot: "Which way is the wind coming from?"
propilot: "uuu that way. eerrr that way?"
