CFI Hiring at FlightSafety

"Good instructor. I think he is with ACA now..."

I kinda doubt that. They changed their name to Independence Air, lasted a couple years, and went under a few months back.

Thats right.... Forgot about the whole name change thing. So they are toast now huh? I wonder where my old friend went? I'll have to drop him an email....

During the interview process, usually after the one on one with Skovgaard (who I told is not there right now and will probably not be back) and Wakefield, they will give you 5 hours of free Frasca time to practice for the sim eval. First of all, to call it a simulator is kind of funny, but that's what you have to do. Even if you don't have any time in a Frasca, this 5 hours should be plenty of time for you to get proficient. If for some reason you need more time, they will most likely give it to you without a fuss. As for the presentation, a wealth of aviation knowledge will help, but in the end its all personality. Be able to communicate simple ideas to people so they can understand it. If you can do that, you should be golden.

Oh yeah, and for anyone who is considering doing the internship......I definitely recommend it.

I have to say that I was very pleased with my training at FSA. It saddens me to see what is going on there, but to be honest I think they have hit rock bottom and as long as they make the proper changes and look into a little of the CFI's input FSA may be looking brighter. There are so many opportunities and options if you do a CFI certificate at the Academy, such as flight instructing there, where, yes you have to sign an 800 hour contract, but if completed they will pay you back for the CFII and MEI, also if you have more that 1000 hours when you are done they will give you a type rating of your choice at any FSI center. There is also the internship which is an excellent networking tool. But I have to admit that I am a better CFI because of the education I gained there. I know there is no waiting list and I am looking forward to returning soon to begin instructing there.

no instructors, mainly admin people.

I heard they fired Joan, the front desk lady, and the meteorologist. Those are the only ones I remember. I think there were about 9-10 all together.

The older guy who used to work for Eastern? Krap, I can't remember his name.

He was my favorite instructor. Not one of those "read from the powerpoint" kind of guys. He really knows his sh*t when it comes to weather... If so, too bad. FlightSafety's loss...

Basically there has been a shift in management and people, but it is for there best and I am excited to see the results. On a flip side some of the lay offs are unfortunate because they were good people. I know people in Admin were let go, some ground instructors, 2 mechanics (i think part-timers), other personal (such as Marleen :( ) and later today we will know what happened with the higher up crew of Gramps, Twitchy and Mr. Personaility. Sadly we also had one amazing man resign, of which I do not know details but Marcel is no longer with the Academy.
Hopefully this is all for the best. Other than that I know there are still plenty of students, flight instructors are swamped, the flightline/dispatch is almost complete and hopefully we will have a hanger again which was taken from the 2004 hurricane.

One other thing they did, was close the library on weekends, and shorten the hours it's open during weekdays. Now it's only open 9-6 M-F. A lot of students are pretty upset about that.

Too bad about Marcel, I suppose he had had enough like many others that have recently left.

Yeah they took him off salery and made him hourly again and he couldn't put food on the table with that. Last I heard he's applying for a King Air Instructor position at the Atlanta Simulator Center.

Fellow FSA instructors/students/vero beach area residents.

I checked some house prices in FL ( mainly vero beach area...as i plan on instructing at FSA until something bigger/better comes along)..A half decent house(nothing fancy) ranges somewhere around $250-$300k or so....I have two properties here in canada....One being my residence will be sold before i move to FL, i am 28.

I agree with B767 and others about the 20% down strongly..I will have some money for the downpayment of the house from my sale as i have owned it since i was 24...my wife however is not sure about the idea of buying a house when we move there...mainly because vero beach being a small town ...unsure of how long we are going to live there...and so forth.
But,me on the other hand ...i have past the idea of renting...and don't feel it is a good idea to rent at all...maybe in the beginning for a month or two...but I am trying to convince my wife into buying something.....at least in the bigger cities around vero like melbourne/west palm beach...so on. I have to factor in the travel time to work then as well.

any thoughts would help.....from guys that hve been .....in a similar type situation, how did they cope with this?

How is vero beach/melbourne area to live...I am trying to get some first hand suggestions rather than what they have on city-data sites.

FlyingBug,

Were you hired from outside FSA, or are you going there to get your CFI and then try and instruct? Either way with all the BS that is going on right now I wouldn't want to work there, and I know several people that feel the same way. Also, if they make you sign a contract be VERY sure about what it says. You mentioned you wanted to work there until something better comes along, just make sure you can leave anytime and not have to pay them back for any training. I know I sound negative. The training was excellent, but they treat their instructors like crap.

As for buying a house, I think anyone would tell you if you're only going to be there for a year or two it probably isn't worth it and you'd end up losing money before you made any. Of course rent is just another black hole we throw money into.

Good luck.

I bought a house in Vero when I became an instructor there and sold it just over a year and a half later. Made 4 times my current regional pay in equity. So I would say buying a house is not a bad idea.

well, then I'd say just make sure you run the numbers first. It can go either way from what I've read. Seems like the housing market is doing well in that area, so that probably helps.

same here......

all you need is another hurricane to wipe out all the crappy houses out there.....anything left standing will automatically be worth 100k more....that's what happend the first time.....
