CFI checkride timing

Hey guys, I'm getting close to being ready for my CFI checkride. My problem is I will only be at 165-170 helicopter hours when I take it. I'd prefer to take it soon and get it out of the way. I would then time build and work on my CFII.

My instructor is suggesting I wait until 200 hours so I can get the SFAR sign off in the R22.

My question is, should I wait until 200 or would I be able to take it soon and be able to teach in Robinsons once I reach 200 hours?

I took both CFI and CFII at about 100 hours, both in Robinson. You obviously cannot teach in R22/44 until you have 200, but yes you can take the test and even teach in say S-300

I'm in the same boat. I'm at about 130h, could get my CFI add-on by 150h. Not much to do after that, other than get my instrument add-on, I guess. I'm a fix wing CFI, and hate the idea of paying more money in the helicopter to get to the 200h.

Do it now while your primary training is still fresh in your head. As soon as you stop using it you start loosing it. Either way you are still going to have to pay for those 20-30 hours. Better to get the checkride out of the way then wait.

Thanks for the replies. I'd prefer to do it now. The reason he is suggesting I wait is to get SFAR sign off as well. If I take my checkride now, will I need to go back to the examiner once I reach 200 hours for the sign off or would the checkride satisfy this?

Great, thanks. I assume it would be a quick checkride just showing that I can teach the awareness training?
In theory, yes, but why go through 2 check rides covering the same things? The examiner has to see your abilities in reference to SFAR 73 training regardless of the 200 hour requirement. Not to mention saving some cash on the examiner fee. You could get, like, another 1.5 hours with that money!
