In order for a CFI to be able to instruct, does he have to be with a flight school or can he just instruct on his own?

True.

I asked for permission to do a little freelancing from the company that I worked for. Actually made some good scratch because instead of charging my student $30/hr (and only seeing $12), I'd charge them $30 and see $30.

Is it better to do it from a flight school or a individual cfi? My guess would be a flightschool since more people choose that. Also, I called American Flyers for my intro and they say they don't have that $50 intro. They only have a 2 hour flight for $185. Is this a bad deal? And whats your opinions on American Flyers?

If you KNOW you are going to continue training, then the 2 hour flight is a really good thing to do. You'll get alot more out of it.

It's a bit of a discount too, most flight schools will charge anywhere from $80(C-152) - $140 (C-172SP) per hour for airplane and instructor, so $185 for 2 hour flight is reasonable.

What do they do for the 2 hours flight? I couldn't find anything on it on their site?

I would go for the 2 hour though.

I really don't know anything about American Flyers. I could hardly tell you what a fair rental rate would be on a Cessna!

I personally like the independant route, and if given theopprtunity, I do my own flight training with independant instructors. You're freed up from alot of silly nonsense then. You can train the way you want, when you want. That's the plus in my book!!!

If you're wondering about American Flyers, drop fly_by_night a PM...he did his CF_ there. He might be able to lead you in the right direction (read: PM him now and listen to what he says....
