Cessna C120-140-170, Piper PA20-22,...

I have a friend here who is interested in buying an airplane and I would have to take care of it for him.

He has a pretty limited budget, the airplane is going to be sent here to Brazil (ad a good 20% to the cost of the plane to do that).

His plan is to keep it reg in the US, the only problem is that this way we will have to pay more for AVGAS (N reg pay about 50% more), normal price is already more expensive here then in the US.

What is he looking for:

2 place, 4 would be nice but not really necessary if that can keep the costs down
<10 gph
100-110 kts cruise speed
Budget 25k
200-300 NM range

Most likely the airplane is going to be based at a small grass runway, we don't need a STOL, but something with good short filed performance would be nice, the plane has also to be pretty strong because the runway is not in good shape.

We looked at Piper cubs, but they are out of budget, slow, and don't have any range. Here in Brazil there are not many places to get AVGAS and they are far apart.

Aeroncas Champ and Chief are also nice but a lot slower then what we are looking for.

I was thinking at a Piper Pacer or tri pacer (a Colt would be fine but seems that for couple more $ you can get a 4 seater faster pacer), they are in our range and there are many of them for sale.
An other option I was looking at are Cessnas 120-140, they seem to be cheap: very good performance on little gas.
Some 170s out there are in our range but I don't know much about them, but there are many of them here in Brazil.
You can find a C170 project for the same price as a C120, lets say the planes are in the same shape would it cost the same to fix them up? or the C170 is going to need more work and $?

Any ideas?

Stinson 108's (Voyager and Flying Station Wagon) are 4-place, 150-165 hp, cruise at ~115 kts, 500 mile range. They are taildraggers in your price range. I think they burn ~8-10 gph. Excellent parts availability from used aircraft and/or Univair.

Any PIREP on them?

What is the budget? Sometimes I see C180's that aren't too badly priced. Forget 185's though, they are way too much. I was just thinking about a C170 going out of a short rough strip in Brazil. When it is hot they can be dogs. My grandfather has a longer grass strip with no obstacles (tall ones at least), and I can tell you even in a WI summer there isn't much performance.

nvm... I just daw the budget. You might find a 170 around that price. ;)

I love this thread...

It is like a "WacoFan appreciation thread".

Great work!!!
Now, now WacoFan, you're not the only one that loves/prefers classic aircraft and those beautiful sounding radials. I'm right there with you.

I just don't talk about it much here. Afterall, this is "jetcareers" not "coolestaircraftevercareers", "radialcareers", "taildraggercareers", "propcareers", etc.

You can't do what you want to do for the money you want to do it with.

If the budget is set in stone, yet you're willing to compromise on speed, payload, and range, I'd go with a Cessna 140. It fits the price, goes 85 knots, has a range of 250 miles, and can handle shorter/rougher strips. If you want to increase the range, I would carry an 8 gallon gas can in the baggage compartment. It would weigh 50 pounds, but would increase your range by 1.5 hours.

The next logical step would be a Cessna 170. Does everything you want to do, but there's no way you can get a decent one for $25k. I'd expect to pay $35k-$40k for a good, airworthy C-170.

Good luck in your search!

Would this be crazy to put together?

I really like the Stinson 108s , but I doubt we could find any parts for the engine here in Brazil, there are many STCs out there, what would be the best option?
I'm not an A&P, but I think you would be better off buying a flying airplane than a project, unless you are an A&P or have a friend who is and will work for beverages and pizza. Otherwise, it could get expensive and you can easily end up putting lots more $ into the plane than what it's worth.
Besides, that looks like it will take a long time to get airworthy. Parts are very much available though. Univair has lots of them, plus there are Stinson clubs that might be a useful resource. Check those links I posted earlier, there are lots of resources there as well as restorations in progress and completed.

I've been looking at these (as well as the ones you mentioned) and am considering getting one myself, but I want an O-470 and floats with it. I may have to get those mods after I buy the plane. I think I am leaning towards the -3.
