Caution Wake Turbulence

I had a really wild experience yesterday. As some of you know there is a bike path just under the approach ends of 35/34R/34L in SLC. I was riding yesterday and there was a C-5 Galaxy on approach. Those things are so cool to watch land. They are so big it looks like they are in slo-mo. Plus, the thing didn't even look like it rounded out at all, just a big thump!

So about 1-2 min later I ride right under the MALSR and almost get knocked off my bike becuase of the wake turbulence! It was wild.

That's cool.

Those things are HUGE! We used to load about five Blackhawks in them.

Every time I had to load one I would act like I had never seen the thing before, just to get the grand o'le tour of the airplane. Over and over again.

Almost got to ride in one but had to crew my helo instead all the way to Cali.

Yeah they rebuild them here at the depot. About a 220-270 day process + or -.

They also just recently took an A model apart here piece by piece to determine A model health and how to plan $ustainment for it.

The cockpit and new engine upgrade program for it is only a lousy 10 billion or so. I wish they would accelerate this and get it done, seeing as all the other money we waste on dumb stuff, doing something like this is actually pretty smart.

On the base my parents live on there is a jogging track that paralells a taxi way. I was out running and there was a c-5 taxiing for takeoff so I stopped to watch, as it turns for the runway I just happened to be right behind it. I seriously almost layed down to hold onto the grass to keep from blowing away, and that was while it was taxiing.

I encountered my first wake turbulance today in a long time. Had a 727 take off 30 seconds before me on a parallel, and my runway was downwind. When I flared my C172, it rattled a lot at first then stopped and let me finally touch down.

Amazing how powerful wake turbulance can be....
