Car Troubles...

I just sold my 335i and bought a 2003 Subaru Outback for my upcoming move to UND. It turns out that it has a corroded exhaust that needs replacement. (My fault. I should've looked more closely.)

Now I'm stuck with the car and the replacement expense. I want this car to last me ~4-5 years, so do I need to use stainless steel exhaust? Has anyone else had any serious rust issues?

Any input would be appreciated...

Thanks.

I haven't had my car here through a winter yet, but judging by the number of rusted out cars I would go with the stainless exhaust.

Replacing the exhaust on a Subaru is a total non-event. Is it just the muffler section, from the cat?

Unless the Imprezza is completely different than the Outback, which I doubt, it is super easy to replace and relatively cheap. The cat-back bolts up to the cat with two spring bolts and hangs on 4 rubber exhaust brackets. Slide the exhaust under the car, hang the muffler section, slide up between the tires and hang the other two, bolt it up and drive away.

If you are getting into the down pipe section it is a bit more involved, but I cant see there being much corrosion there as I remember there being a shield over that section.

Are you going to be up here fall semester or spring I cannot really remember. I'm finally getting a car up here (and it doesn't have a stainless steel exhaust, hasn't been here for winter) but I doubt most people pay for a stainless steel exhaust to be put on until it needs to happen but since you're already in the position to replace it might as well?

I'll be there for the spring semester.

It turns out that the stainless steel exhaust doesn't really fit into the budget at the moment (it's not just the muffler... it's nearly all of the piping and the catalytic converter) so I have to go with the aluminized steel. I'm crossing my fingers that it'll hold up for at least 3 years.

Awesome! I'm not great with cars but didn't realize there was a huge price difference between the two but I think you'll be okay. Depending on the apartments you get you might get indoor garage so there's that. You'll get to register for classes in October/November I think and if you wanna know who to take what with lemme know!

I put in an an application for the student apartments across the street from Odegard. (No garages...) That's more of a plan B, though. If you know anyone that may need a roommate in the Spring, let me know!

Ahh gotcha, those are decent, and being right across from Odegard will be nice in the winter. I'll ask around but most of my friends have signed one year leases for the next school year. Come next year I'll be looking for apartment and people to room with though!
