Cape Air/Nantucket Airlines Cessna 402-C Captain.

are they a two-pilot operation??? I have wondered that for a while. I think they'd be fun to fly for, since I would like to be flying back east.

Bluelake: Nope, must have ATP to get looked at and as far as I know they don't have SIC's except for line training.

Cutlass: How is CH doing anyways? Do you ever hear from him? How's training going for you? Good luck and tell everybody hi from FL for me.

Take care.

Isn't it kind of weird that a "regioanl airline" operates Cessna 402s?

Not really. Mesa started with a Piper Lance I believe. Cape Air has a nice little niche and they serve it very well with the 402's....they don't need anything bigger/faster than that. Yeah they could put a CRJ on the BOS to the Vineyard run but that's just silly.....maybe they could move into something like a B1900 but that means alot $$$ for the aicraft, alot more $$$ for gas, more $$$$ for pilots(you now need 2 instead of 1) - that in turn drives the prices to an unexceptable level for most people and they start to find other ways to get there, etc etc.

They have a loyal following, good record, they've been in business for a while, don't think they've ever furloughed, pilots I've talked to seem to love it, they're not out spending a ton of money triing to grow into something they're not and won't ever be -- in short Cape Air is one of the few airlines I would give an 'A+' to for business plan and overall operations.

Oh no, back in the day, I think I flew on a Cessna 404 from Visalia to LAX until it got upgraded to a Navajo. Then we thought we were living large when it became a metroliner!

From what I have heard they picked up some old CO ATR42s for their Microasia CO regional work. They may bring some of those over to the Cape if they get busy during the summer.

Jason,

I agree with you. As I am just finishing my marketing/aviation degree... I would tend to say that Cape Air/Nantucket Airlines does an excellent job executing their strategy. If you look at it from a marketing perspective... bringing a CRJ-200 into the operation would significantly decrease flight time, give prop-scared pax a little more comfort... but they'd be the total opposite of what their market demands!

I wrote a report on Cape Air last yr. for a MKT class, if anyone wants to read about that airline inside and out PM me for a copy. I don't have much about their pilots, just about their bus. strategy.

I know one guy who flew for them (met him at our FBO at KTOL a few weeks ago, he now flies Bill Cosby's PC-12), and he said that almost every flight, esp. was flown practically down to minnimums. I wonder what kind of respect these guys get in the industry, none the less it's a great company. Anyone know of a Cape pilot doing anything significant??

I've been eyeballing CapeAir also. If you look at their schedule you'll notice that all of the "hop's" are 20 minutes in duration to almost every destination.
