Canadian to FAA Conversion

Hi all,

I am new to jetcareers forums so go easy on me.

I hold Canadian Commercial/multi/IFR/Instructor ratings. I am still low time and am looking to convert my license to FAA. I am looking to move to the NYC area and am looking for estimates on pricing to do this (license). As well as where I should do this. Also does anyone know about obtaining a work visa to instruct in the U.S. I appreciate all of your input.
Thanks
M

no takers?

Was thinkin of doin my conversion in Trenton NJ at ATP. I have also searched for this topic on previous posts but was all outdated.

Dude, you got to be an American citizen to go to ATP. If you live in SW Ontario I would look at Dunkirk aviation near Buffalo. They specialize in doing Canadian conversions. The private converts right away but the comm, MIFR require flight, oral written tests. The FSDO in Rochester would be the place to go get your conversions. It is not easy to get a work permit to Flight Instruct in the U.S. The only other way is if you do most of your training at a U.S. flight school that offers a J1 or M1 visa. With the J1 you will be able to study and work in the States for up to 2 yrs. That means study at a flight school and then work at that particular flight school as an instructor. You will not be able to work any other jobs at all, even McDonalds(lol). The M1 allows you to study only for up to a year but there is a way to stay and instruct for up to a year and that is through a sysytem they have called Practical Training which is good for a year as well.
I was looking at attending AriBen in florida to finish my training and then stay and instruct since they offer a J1 Visa as well as gaurantee you a CFI position. The nice thing about the school is that all your training is done in multi engine aircraft and you build mostly multi time as an instructor. By some amazing luck I happened to score a co-pilot job flying a twin otter in the Carribean. All I have to do is finish my Comm,MIFR and get a PPC on the twin otter from Flight safety in Toronto. If I was you since you are already so far ahead in the game I would apply up North to places like First Air, Arctic Sunwest, Ken Borek and try and score a co-pilot job or go do some bush flying during the summer months in NW Ontario or Manitoba. For more Canadian content I would check out www.avcanada.ca and www.aviation.ca and www.pilotcareercentre.com
Good luck. Email me if you have any more questions.
