Can you hold a 1st Class while using metformin alone?

The title of the thread says it all really. I was wondering if a type 2 diabetic, using metformin on its own, can hold a 1st or even 2nd Class medical certificate.

Also, is it true the FAA will accept an HbA1C of up to 9 or is it lower?

Yes you can. It is a Special issuance. The HgbA1c must be less than 9.0 nad you must obtain one every 3 months, reporting them to the FAA once a year.
