Can a deaf or hearing impaired person fly?

I've was thinking about this earlier and was wondering if there is any way for a deaf person to fly.
Perhaps 3rd class or LSA?
If not what factors are stopping him?

I knew a fully deaf instrument/commercial pilot. It requires a second person in the aircraft for ATC stuff but the deaf person most certainly can get their certificates.

I know some pretty hard-of-hearing glider pilots (probably most :), but when it gets bad enough they take along someone else to fly.

I had a good buddy instruct a deaf student, it is possible with some restrictions.
